The following guidelines will help with planning for an exhibit at the Weise Gallery.

General Information

  • All work must be reviewed by the Executive Director or Associate Director prior to installation.
  • The library does not charge a fee for exhibits but does welcome the donation of an exhibit piece to be permanently displayed at the library.

Display Information

  • Gallery exhibits are displayed 2 months at a time or according to schedule availability.
  • No more than 50 pictures may be displayed in the gallery area.
  • All exhibits must be contained within the gallery area.
  • No exhibit items should be placed on or near the red wall.
  • Start and ending dates are set. Exhibits must be removed by the end date to allow the next exhibit to arrive as scheduled.
  • Free standing pieces are permitted, but artists must provide their own bases if needed.

Hanging Artwork

  • All pictures must have picture-hanging wire on the back.
  • The existing gallery hardware must be used to hang all pictures.
  • Additional hardware use is not permitted if it damages or attaches to the wall in any way.
  • It is the responsibility of the artist to ensure that work is securely displayed on the hanging fixtures provided.
  • The gallery is equipped with a wire hanging system consisting of adjustable hooks to attach to the artwork wires. Each wire has a 50 pound capacity.

Supplementary Material/Sales

  • Supplementary materials, explanations, or pricing information is the responsibility of the exhibitor.
  • If the art is for sale, it is the responsibility of the artist to provide contact information for sales. The library will not be responsible or act as the go-between for any sale.
  • The exhibitor information sheet should contain the following information:
    • Name of piece
    • Size of piece
    • Price of piece (pictures: framed or unframed information)
    • Contact information: e-mail and/or phone number


  • If you plan to hold an opening reception, please provide the following information:
    • Date of reception (must be approved by Library Director)
    • Time and duration of the reception (check library hours in advance)
    • If there will be food and/or drinks, please provide the following information:
    • Set-up requirement
    • Number of guests who will attend
    • How the reception will be promoted
    • Person/organization name who will provide the food and drink
    • Clean-up is the responsibility of the exhibitor; housekeeping is not available after 3:30 p.m.
  • Please note the following:
    • The library will reimburse up to $100 in food/drink receipts toward reception costs.
    • Original receipts are required for the reimbursement.
    • Additional information is required to reimburse an individual or organization. This information includes social security number for tax purposes, individual name and home address.  If not already employed by the State of Maryland you will also be asked to fill out a W-9 form.  If you are unwilling to provide this information we will be unable to reimburse you.
    • Reimbursements may take up to three weeks and are in the form of a check.


  • The Library will send out a press release and announce the exhibit on the Weise Gallery web site.
  • Please submit the following information at least 30 days before you exhibit:
    • A biography about yourself with the name of your exhibit.
    • A picture of an exhibit item and/or a photo of yourself.
    • The URL of your website, if you have one.


  • There is a guard on duty at the front entrance of the Library during all hours that the Library is open to the public. The Library & the University of Maryland, Baltimore will not be responsible for any damage or loss that occurs to items on display.
