Ian Williams, a graphic artist, physician, and humanist, coined the term \u201cgraphic medicine\u201d to describe \u201cthe interaction between the medium of comics and the discourse of healthcare.\u201d Writing in\u00a0BMJ<\/em>\u00a0(2010;340:c863), Michael J Green and Kimberly R Meyers argue that \u201cgraphic stories have an important role in patient care, medical education, and the social critique of the medical profession.\u201d The juxtaposition of text and image, they claim, helps to lead to a \u201cvisceral understanding\u201d that normal narratives cannot.<\/p>\n The HS\/HSL has started a new collection of these innovative texts. Titles include\u00a0Graphic Medicine Manifesto<\/em>,\u00a0Pain is Really Strange<\/em>, and\u00a0Bad Doctor: The Troubled Life and Times of Dr. Iwan James<\/em>. They are shelved on the first floor of the Library next to the Leisure Reading Collection. The collection is small, but will grow over time.
