{"id":3027,"date":"2017-12-18T11:06:29","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T15:06:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=3027"},"modified":"2017-12-18T11:06:29","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T15:06:29","slug":"hs-hsl-cancels-web-of-science-retains-scopus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=3027","title":{"rendered":"HS\/HSL Cancels Web of Science, Retains Scopus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3028\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/WoS.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"549\" height=\"121\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beginning January 2018, the HS\/HSL will no longer license\u00a0<em>Web of Science<\/em>, an abstract and citation database that includes\u00a0<em>Journal Citation Reports (JCR)<\/em>. A comparable database,\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>, provides similar information to\u00a0<em>Web of Science<\/em>. Since the Library can no longer afford to provide access to both resources, and because\u00a0<em>Web of Science<\/em>\u00a0was used much less often than\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>, it was identified as a resource to discontinue. The rising cost of library resources combined with a flat resources budget resulted in this difficult decision.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, the Library will continue to provide access to a comparable database,\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>. It is the largest scholarly literature database available, offering researchers the ability to search across all disciplines, including basic sciences, social sciences, health sciences, and much more. Like\u00a0<em>Web of Science<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>\u00a0allows searchers to discover documents that cite articles and view reference lists cited within articles.\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>\u00a0also offers tools for evaluating both individual and institutional scholarly output.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatives to\u00a0<em>Journal Citation Reports (JCR)<\/em>, which allows researchers to determine the impact factor of a journal, are also available.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.eigenfactor.org\/projects\/journalRank\/journalsearch.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eigenfactor<\/a>\u00a0uses the same underlying data as\u00a0<em>Journal Citation Reports<\/em>\u00a0to rank journals within their disciplines.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/journalmetrics.scopus.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CiteScore<\/a>\u00a0uses\u00a0<em>Scopus<\/em>\u00a0data to provide journal rankings.
