In celebration of National Poetry Month and National Library Week, we would like to share a poem that was found in our Historical Collection.\u00a0 The poem was written by Martha Cordell Jeffers.\u00a0 Jeffers was the daughter of Dr. Eugene F. Cordell, the first official Librarian at UMB and a Professor of the History of Medicine.\u00a0 We like to think this poem was inspired by him.<\/p>\n
The Library<\/p>\n
As evening shadows fall across the walls
\nAnd twilight makes its usual call
\nHe wanders down sweet memory lane
\nTo reminisce with his friends again
\nHe sits in deepest reverie
\nA book is resting on his knee
\nAnd as he turns the pages back
\nHe sees, a dingy dusty spot
\nWhere spiders weave their canopies
\nOn books that seem to plead their urgent need
\nAnd this is where he first met these
\nLets close the book and forward go
\nCome let me lead you to your goal
\nAt last they rest on polished shelves
\nTheir colors like the autumn leaves
\nRed, brown, and some are emerald green
\nTheir wealth is there for all to share thru out the years
\nThe evening star will soon appear
\nAnd it is time to say fare-well
\nHe waves good bye and with a smile
\nWhispers yes, I\u2019m satisfied<\/p>\n
