The exhibit, adapted for use by the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS\/HSL), will be on display in the Library\u2019s Frieda O. Weise Gallery, August 24, 2018 \u2013 October 14, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The main message of the exhibit is \u201c<strong>One Health,\u201d<\/strong> which is derived from the understanding that human health, animal health, and environmental health are closely connected.\u00a0 <strong>Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World <\/strong>emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary responses to stop outbreaks\u2014 and the impact those outbreaks have on communities.<\/p>\n<p>Outbreak examines zoonotic emerging infectious diseases (EIDs)\u00a0and their pandemic risks in the 21st\u00a0 century.\u00a0 NMNH\u00a0collaborated with public health institutions to address these questions:\u00a0Why do pathogens emerge where\u00a0they do?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How do they \u201cspill over\u201d from animals to people?\u00a0 What causes them to amplify and spread quickly?\u00a0 And finally,\u00a0what can individuals and communities do to prevent the next outbreak?<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Outbreak exhibition project is a\u00a0collaborative effort between the Smithsonian\u2019s\u00a0 National\u00a0Museum of Natural\u00a0History and global partners to raise awareness of the human,\u00a0 animal,\u00a0and environmental factors contributing to infectious disease epidemics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The 1918 Flu Epidemic and Baltimore: 100 years later<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the Smithsonian\u2019s <em>Outbreak<\/em> exhibit, the HS\/HSL has created a supplementary exhibit remembering the 1918 Flu Pandemic.\u00a0 This year marks the 100<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the pandemic that killed between 50 and 100 million people worldwide.\u00a0 Baltimore and the University of Maryland, Baltimore were not immune to this incredible international natural disaster.\u00a0 This exhibit explains the spread of the disease in Baltimore and at the University, while supplying a supporting story to the Smithsonian\u2019s \u201cconnected world\u201d message.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;\" border=\"1\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Upcoming Events<\/strong> for<strong> <em>Outbreak: Epidemics in a Connected World<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thursday, September 13, 10:30 a.m.\u00a0 Exhibit Opening, Press Conference, located in the HS\/HSL&#8217;s Weise Gallery on the first floor.\u00a0 Please <a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/forms\/4EbZZpsNiYv23Qm32\">RSVP HERE<\/a>.
