{"id":3620,"date":"2019-02-07T15:38:15","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T19:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=3620"},"modified":"2020-04-03T11:19:10","modified_gmt":"2020-04-03T15:19:10","slug":"celebrate-american-heart-month-by-reading-historic-heart-theses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=3620","title":{"rendered":"Celebrate American Heart Month by Reading Historic UMB Theses on the Heart"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"642\" height=\"859\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/historic-heart-theses.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3615\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/historic-heart-theses.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/historic-heart-theses-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>February is American Heart Month.&nbsp; To acknowledge this month, historical collections is highlighting unique materials on this vital organ.&nbsp; First up, a series of historic dissertations and theses written by graduates of the School of Medicine from 1830 to 1884 on the heart<g class=\"gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace\" id=\"23\" data-gr-id=\"23\">.<\/g><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These dissertations highlight the changing theories and teachings on diseases of the heart and its physiology.&nbsp; When read from oldest to newest they provide a timeline of heart research of 19<sup>th<\/sup> century medical education at the University of Maryland. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earliest thesis from 1830 is philosophical, asking the question,  &#8220;What is the principle of life?&#8221;&nbsp; Dr. Mitchell believes it to be the heart. He states, \u201cThat the heart contains this principle [life] in a greater degree than any other part it distributes its vivifying influence to the remotest parts through the medicine of circulation.\u201d His argument is that the heart is the most important organ in all the body, ruling all other systems and organs.&nbsp; In 1830, a lot was unknown about the heart and circulation system, yet its importance was recognized and taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The later theses describe the way the blood flows through the heart and paint a picture of its anatomy. Trautman\u2019s 1862 thesis states, \u201cThe heart can be divided into two separate organs, the right and left heart, or the heart of the respiratory; and the heart of the arterial circulation.\u201d Indicating an early understanding of how the chambers of the heart work to control circulation throughout the body. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interested in reading the theses?&nbsp; Check them out in our Digital Archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>John T.
