Gipe, then dean of the School of Nursing, donated three notes written by Florence Nightingale to a Mr. Platt.&nbsp; It is believed Mr. Platt was a chemist or pharmacist who furnished Nightingale with supplies and medication at Lea Hurst, her family home in Derbyshire, England.&nbsp; The notes have been digitized and are available in the library\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10713\/8871\">Digital Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florence Nightingale founded the St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in London, which began formalized nursing education in England.\u00a0 Nightingale\u2019s pupil, Louisa Parsons, was hired as the first superintendent for the University of Maryland\u2019s School of Nursing in 1889, one of the first nursing schools in the United States.\u00a0 Parsons introduced the nursing cap, the Flossie, which was once worn by University of Maryland graduates.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"291\" height=\"288\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Flossie.jpg\" alt=\"Flossie Nurse Cap\" class=\"wp-image-3732\"\/><figcaption><em>Image from <a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10713\/7106\">Innovation in Action: The University of Maryland School of Nursing From it&#8217;s Founding in 1889 to 2012<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about UMB\u2019s School of Nursing check out the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/handle\/10713\/35\">Digital Archive<\/a>, which includes yearbooks, academic catalogs, histories, and newsletters of the School or stop by historical collections on the 5<sup>th<\/sup> floor of the HS\/HSL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And remember to thank a nurse this week!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 6-12, 2019 is National Nurses Week; the HS\/HSL\u2019s historical collections is celebrating by highlighting our materials from the founder of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale.&nbsp; In 1962, Dr. Florence M.
