{"id":4140,"date":"2020-04-28T06:59:57","date_gmt":"2020-04-28T10:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=4140"},"modified":"2020-06-14T07:12:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T11:12:00","slug":"victory-3d-printing-for-health-care-personnel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=4140","title":{"rendered":"Victory 3D Printing for Health Care Personnel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Health care personnel the world over are facing the dangers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/detail\/03-03-2020-shortage-of-personal-protective-equipment-endangering-health-workers-worldwide\">a critical shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE)<\/a> during the COVID-19 pandemic. PPE includes items such as isolation gowns, eye protection, face masks, N95 respirators, ventilators, and more. In response to the global supply crisis, agencies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/ppe-strategy\/index.html\">CDC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/medical-devices\/3d-printing-medical-devices\/faqs-3d-printing-medical-devices-accessories-components-and-parts-during-covid-19-pandemic\">FDA<\/a> are recommending the use of improvised PPE to fill the gap until official supplies are more readily available.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">People all around the world are leveraging a wide range of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tools and <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">materials to make improvised PPE<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Academic health sciences libraries with makerspaces are particularly suited to contribute to th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">effort. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Not only are such libraries likely to have 3D printers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and other fabrication tools<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, they are also likely to have a connection to the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">front lines of local responses to public health crises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The University of Maryland Health Sciences &amp; Human Services Library<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (HSHSL)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> has been contributing 3D printed parts for <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">various<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> local <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">PPE needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\">A <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flattenthecurvebaltimore.com\/\">Baltimore-wide effort to make durable improvised PPE<\/a> available to health care providers, by the case load at minimal cost. The organizers solicit people with 3D printers and sewing machines to print face shield parts and sew face masks. Organizers then sanitize, assemble, and package them for distribution<\/span><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\" data-wac-het=\"1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"TextRun  BCX2 SCXW132707487\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun  BCX2 SCXW132707487\" data-wac-het=\"1\">The Infectious Disease department at the University of Maryland Medical Center. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/sh\/nsfcmeiiyq3bikc\/AABcp2S3yxpjd6VwOxhx90kta\">Multiple PPE designs<\/a> have been prototyped and reviewed for usage.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\">All 10,000+ personnel at the <span class=\"TextRun  BCX2 SCXW132707487\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\" lang=\"EN-US\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun  BCX2 SCXW132707487\" data-wac-het=\"1\">University of Maryland Medical Center<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\">All h<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\">ospital<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\"> staff wear face masks for extended periods of times, c<\/span><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-wac-het=\"1\">ausing broken skin and irritation behind their ears. 3D printed surgical mask tension release bands (&#8220;ear savers&#8221;) can alleviate this issue.
