Check out our <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/hslupdates\/?p=4601\">full schedule of events<\/a> and sign up for a workshop or three!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This week, in honor of Black History Month, we would like to highlight a few of the great projects and organizations that are led by Black scholars and data scientists and that focus on issues of data and racial equity and justice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajl.org\/\">The Algorithmic Justice League<\/a>, founded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetofcode.com\/\">Poet of Code<\/a> Joy Buolamwini (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jovialjoy?lang=en\">@jovialjoy<\/a>), aims \u201cto raise public awareness about the impacts of AI, equip advocates with empirical research to bolster campaigns, build the voice and choice of most impacted communities, and galvanize researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners to mitigate AI bias and harms.\u201d\u00a0 Twitter: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajlunited?lang=en\">@AJLUnited<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackgirlscode.com\/\">Black Girls Code<\/a>, founded by Kimberly Bryant (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/6gems?lang=en\">@6Gems<\/a>), aims \u201cto increase the number of women of color in the digital space by empowering girls of color ages 7 to 17 to become innovators in STEM fields, leaders in their communities, and builders of their own futures through exposure to computer science and technology. To provide African-American youth with the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the U.S. by 2020, and to train 1 million girls by 2040.\u201d Twitter: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BlackGirlsCode\">@BlackGirlsCode<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blkindata.github.io\/\">Black in Data<\/a>, founded by Dr. Ruth Agbakoba (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RuthAgbakoba\">@RuthAgbakoba<\/a>) and Simone Webb (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simsci9?lang=en\">@SimSci9<\/a>), \u201crepresents a community of academics, professionals, and students working in various areas of data. We gather to support, learn from, and share opportunities with one another, and ultimately increase representation of Black people in data fields.\u201d Twitter: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/blkindata?lang=en\">@BlkInData<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.covidblack.org\/\">COVID Black<\/a>, founded by Dr. Kim Gallon (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/blackdigitalhum\/media\">@BlackDigitalHum<\/a>), is \u201ca Black Health data organization that uses data to tell stories about the Black lived experience to advocate for health equity. \u201d Twitter: <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/COVIDBLK\">@COVIDBLK\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/covidtracking.com\/race\">The COVID Racial Data Tracker<\/a>, initiated by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dribram?lang=en\">@DrIbram<\/a>), \u201cadvocates for, collects, publishes, and analyzes racial data on the pandemic across the United States.
