The Center for Data and Bioinformation Services (CDABS) is the University of Maryland Health Sciences and Human Services Library hub for data and bioinformation learning, services, resources, and communication.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are wrapping up another week (Mar 08 -12) of learning and growing at CDABS. This\u00a0<\/span>week’s<\/span>\u00a0DABS focus will be on machine learning.\u00a0<\/span>W<\/span>h<\/span>at is machine learning?\u00a0<\/span>Machine learning involves using\u00a0<\/span>specialized\u00a0<\/span>computer software for automation and decisions by a person to\u00a0<\/span>extract knowledge from data.\u00a0<\/span>There are two main categories of Machine learning, supervised learning which involves making predictions using data\u00a0<\/span>(for example: spam filters)\u00a0<\/span>and unsupervised learning<\/span> for finding a structure from data<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>T<\/span>opic\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>odeling, in Natural Language Processing, to elucidate <\/span>topics<\/span>\u00a0in a collection of texts<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0There are several resources on the web to get started\u00a0doing machine learning in your research. Here are a few places to start digging in that are\u00a0<\/span>phenomenal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Data School is an online<\/span><\/span>\u00a0portal with<\/span><\/span>\u00a0blog posts, videos, courses,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Jupyter<\/span><\/span>\u00a0notebooks, and webcast recordings<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to learn data science<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Data School offers three Machine Learning courses:\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Introduction to Machine Learning with scikit-learn, Building an Effective Machine Learning Workflow with scikit-learn, and Machine Learning with Text in Python.   2. Machine Learning Mastery is a website dedicated to making you awesome at machine learning. They use a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>top down<\/span><\/span>\u00a0approach to learn modern machine learning via hands-on tutorials. (<\/span><\/span>15 minute<\/span><\/span> read)\u00a0https:\/\/machinelearningmastery.com\/start-here\/<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Stat<\/span><\/span>Q<\/span><\/span>uest<\/span>\u00a0provides an \u201cAn epic journey through statistics and machine learning\u201d. Join Josh Starmer and see his unique and fun approach to breaking down the complex topics into\u00a0<\/span><\/span>small\u00a0<\/span><\/span>digestible bits<\/span><\/span>\u00a0via engaging YouTube videos with accompanying code<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Check out the section on machine learning but also make sure to broaden your exploration to many other topics in statistics.
