Tooey<\/strong><br \/>\n      Executive Director<\/div>\n<p>How many times have I written those words? Every time I do, I can feel the energy of a new academic year.  It is truly wonderful to see old friends and meet new friends.<\/p>\n<p>If you are new to the university, I hope you find a second home (after your school, of course!) here at the HS\/HSL. The three words we use to describe the HS\/HSL experience are:  Expertise, Resources, Place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expertise:<\/strong> The team here at the library offers a range of services to support the education, research, and care missions of the university. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/assistance\/expertise.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Research and Education Faculty Librarians<\/a> assigned to each school work with faculty and students both in the curriculum and on projects. Subject guides have been developed for each school and numerous special topics. Our Research Connection program offers help with systematic reviews, PubMed Central submissions, metadata management, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/services\/researchconnection.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">and so much more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resources:<\/strong> We endeavor to provide our faculty, staff, and students with the resources they need to succeed.  Our <a href=\"http:\/\/atoz.ebsco.com\/Titles\/4484#65\/1\/1\/journalsOnly\" target=\"_blank\">journals<\/a> are almost 100% online, which means you can access them from anywhere.  We license dozens of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/resources\/databases\/\" target=\"_blank\">databases<\/a> in all disciplines.  If we don&#8217;t license the resource, there are a number of ways <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docdel.umaryland.edu\" target=\"_blank\">we can get you the information<\/a> you need in a timely manner. As of the end of August, you can use your regular campus UMID and password to request articles.  And it&#8217;s free!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Place:<\/strong> When we talk about &quot;place,&quot; we actually mean two places.  Increasingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\" target=\"_blank\">our website<\/a> is the primary &quot;place&quot; to go to access our expertise and resources.  Subscribe to <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connective Issues<\/a>.  Follow us on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hshsl\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/umbhshsl\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a>.  Our physical &quot;place&quot; is pretty awesome as well, with 45 small group study rooms (some of which can be <a href=\"http:\/\/cal.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/booking\/studyrooms\" target=\"_blank\">reserved<\/a>, wireless throughout the building, a <a href=\"http:\/\/hshsl.umaryland.libcal.com\/booking\/studio\" target=\"_blank\">presentation practice studio<\/a>, two video conferencing rooms, and plenty of outlets to recharge devices.  And &#8230; the longest continuous staircase in Baltimore.  We are food friendly! Come to the Weise Gallery on the Library&#8217;s 1st floor, where we will have tasty soft pretzels, peanuts, popcorn, and drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Relax, mingle, and meet your friendly librarians and library staff!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"03\" id=\"03\">Use Your UMID to Request Articles and Books (ILLiad)<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>UMB faculty, staff, and students can now use their UMID and password to access <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docdel.umaryland.edu\" target=\"_blank\">ILLiad<\/a>, the system that allows you to place article and book requests. A separate password for ILLiad is no longer needed.  One less password to deal with, and the service is still free!<\/p>\n<p>UMMC employees with an appointment in one of the UMB schools (for example residents\/fellows) can also access ILLiad using their UMID. UMMC employees without an appointment to one of the UMB schools will no longer be eligible for the article and book request service. Some rooms can be <a href=\"http:\/\/cal.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/booking\/studyrooms\" target=\"_blank\">reserved<\/a> for up to three hours a day. All other rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.<\/li>\n<li>Writing a lot of papers? Consider using <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/refworks\" target=\"_blank\">Refworks<\/a>. RefWorks is a web-based citation management system that allows you to store and organize journal citations. Would you like guidance in preparing your plans?  The HS\/HSL has a guide, <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/datamanagement\" target=\"_blank\">Data Management Best Practices<\/a>, which can help you through the process.  The guide provides links to curricula, data sharing policies, tips and templates, and other useful information designed to answer your questions about managing and sharing big data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Data Infrastructure Workshop<\/strong><br \/>\n    This one-day <a href=\"http:\/\/cendievents.iiaweb.com\/CENDI_NFAIS_2014\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">workshop<\/a> is for anyone involved in creating, managing, or using scientific data. The workshop will address the technical, financial, political, and social\/cultural forces that must be explored when assessing the quality and integrity of data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NIH&#8217;s Genomic Data Sharing Policy<\/strong><br \/>\n    The National Institutes of Health recently released a genomic data sharing policy that promotes sharing of large-scale human and non-human genomic data generated from NIH-funded research. When scheduling your consultation, be sure to select the &quot;Online, at a distance&quot; option found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/assistance\/consultation.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">consultation request form<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"08\" id=\"08\">Project SHARE Curriculum<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/projectshare\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume08_Number04\/08.jpg\" alt=\"Project SHARE Group Shot\" width=\"549\" height=\"172\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Announcing the release of the <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/projectshare\" target=\"_blank\">HS\/HSL&#8217;s Project SHARE Curriculum<\/a>, which aims to empower high school students as community health advocates and promote improved health in communities.<\/p>\n<p>The SHARE Project team developed the curriculum as part of a three-year <em>Health Information Resource Grant to Reduce Health Disparities<\/em> (G08LM0011079) from the National Library of Medicine.   During the project&#8217;s first two years, we collaborated with a West Baltimore high school, Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, to deliver 154 hours of instruction to two cohorts of students.  In the project&#8217;s third year, we fine-tuned the curriculum and developed downloadable lesson plans, assignments, handouts, and experiential learning activities.<\/p>\n<p>The curriculum aligns with standards, such as the <em>National Health Education Standards<\/em>, and consists of six modules that can be used independently or as a whole:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Overview of Health Disparities<\/li>\n<li>Quality Health Information<\/li>\n<li>Taking Charge of Your  Health<\/li>\n<li>Smart Food Choices<\/li>\n<li>Crafting and  Delivering the Message<\/li>\n<li>Promoting Health and  Wellness in Your Community<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Build a community around the curriculum by sharing ideas and suggestions through the <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/c.php?g=76220&#038;p=831960\" target=\"_blank\">project blog<\/a>.  Or <a href=\"mailto:share@hshsl.umaryland.edu\">contact the project team<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"09\" id=\"09\">Leveraging Research Impact Workshop<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/services\/researchconnection.cfm\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume08_Number04\/09.jpg\" alt=\"Research Connection\" width=\"549\" height=\"130\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, September 30th at 12:00 p.m., the HS\/HSL will offer a workshop entitled &quot;Leveraging Research Impact Data for Tenure and Promotion.&quot; The workshop covers using tools like Web of Science and Scopus to measure and evaluate the impact of your research to present to funding agencies and promotion and tenure committees. Topics include journal impact factor, h-index, alternative metrics, and methods for maximizing the impact of your research. This course is aimed at faculty who are seeking promotion or tenure or applying for grant funding. This workshop is also available upon request for departments and research groups and can be tailored to a group&#8217;s needs. This workshop is a feature of the HS\/HSL <a href=\"http:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/impact\" target=\"_blank\">Research Impact Assessment<\/a> service, which is a part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/services\/researchconnection.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Research Connection<\/a>, a comprehensive suite of programs and services designed to advance the success of UMB faculty, staff, and students.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"10\" id=\"10\">AccessPharmacy and Clinical Key No Longer Available at HS\/HSL<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>We have had to cancel two resources this past summer:<\/p>\n<p><strong>AccessPharmacy<\/strong><br \/>\n    For the past three years, the School of Pharmacy (SOP) and the HS\/HSL piloted co-licensing campus-wide access to a collection of e-textbooks. Due to escalating costs, publisher unwillingness to &quot;unbundle&quot; core texts from the package, and budget constraints, the Library and SOP mutually agreed to discontinue this product.  This cancellation was effective June 30, 2014.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Clinical Key<\/strong><br \/>\n    Access to Clinical Key was funded by the MPower Virtual Research Library, a project that supported co-licensing of several biosciences resources shared by users from UMB and College Park.  For FY15 the funding was reduced by 40%, and Clinical Key was one of the resources cancelled. This was effective August 30.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Essential Science Indicators will be cancelled effective August 30. The Global Health database will be unavailable after October 31, and several individual bioinformatics journals will be cancelled December 31.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"11\" id=\"11\">SciVal is now UMB Experts!<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>Need to find a colleague to collaborate with?  <\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, HS\/HSL faculty assumed support for the SciVal collaborative faculty research profiles tool.  SciVal is now <a href=\"http:\/\/umaryland.pure.elsevier.com\" target=\"_blank\">UMB Experts<\/a>. Over the next few months, UMB Experts will be updated and edited, and usage policies will be developed. There is still a way to go until it is fully up to date, but UMB Experts is now available through the link on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ord.umaryland.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Office of Research and Development website<\/a>. Questions?  <a href=\"mailto:umbexperts@hshsl.umaryland.edu\">Email us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a name=\"12\" id=\"12\">Notable Tech Trends: The Maker Movement and 3D Printing<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume08_Number04\/12.jpg\" alt=\"3-D Printer\" width=\"549\" height=\"267\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Recently, 3D printing technology and the Maker Movement have gained much traction and transformed themselves from a novelty into a mainstream phenomenon. &quot;Makerspace&quot; refers to a community-operated workspace where people with common interests \u2013 often in computers, machining, technology, science, or digital or electronic art &#8211; meet, socialize, and collaborate. A makerspace encompasses a continuum of activity that includes &quot;co-working,&quot; &quot;hackerspace,&quot; and &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fabfoundation.org\/fab-labs\/what-is-a-fab-lab\/\" target=\"_blank\">fab lab<\/a>.&quot; Hackerspace emphasizes computer programming activities while &quot;fab lab&quot; tends to offer more machinery equipment. All of them share the same focus on making rather than consuming. In order to support individuals in pursuing such making activities, makerspaces offer tools and equipment that are not readily available at home such as a 3D printer and laser cutter, provide a collaborative space where people can learn by hands-on activities, and organize events and workshops.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of a makerspace is to foster and facilitate people&#8217;s creativity and innovation by providing a playful and informal learning environment for hands-on experimentation and learning-by-doing experience. While makerspaces provide many other tools and resource, the most prominently featured technology at makerspaces is 3D printing. Invented in the 1980s, 3D printing technology is not new, but the recent advent of affordable 3D printers on the market has made 3D printing more accessible to the public than ever before. Most 3D printers use ABS or PLA plastic as material and melt it at a high temperature to shape it into a three-dimensional object. It is also possible to use ceramic, metal, chocolate, sugar, and even concrete or organic materials for 3D printing. Scientists are already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2014\/jul\/04\/3d-printed-organs-step-closer\" target=\"_blank\">bio-printing human tissues and attempting to 3D print a human organ itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We need to pay attention to the Maker Movement and 3D printing because they have a significant impact on health sciences research and beyond. By bringing a new and affordable means of production to individuals, the maker movement and 3D printing catalyze innovation and promote entrepreneurship.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A man in Massachusetts created a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/11\/04\/dad-prints-prosthetic-hand-leon-mccarthy_n_4214217.html\" target=\"_blank\">prosthetic hand<\/a> for his son, who was born without fingers, using a 3D printer at only a fraction of the cost for a commercial prosthetic hand.<\/li>\n<li>A Baltimore-based startup company, Verve, launched a <a href=\"http:\/\/stocks.moneyshow.com\/intershow.moneyshow\/news\/read\/27146844\/baltimore_startup%E2%80%99s_kickstarter_raises_$7000+_in_less_than_24_hourshttp:\/stocks.moneyshow.com\/intershow.moneyshow\/news\/read\/27146844\/baltimore_startup%E2%80%99s_kickstarter_raises_$\" target=\"_blank\">Kickstarter campaign<\/a> for their 3D printed device for posture and pain relief (called ARC) and raised over $7,000 in less than 24 hours. The company includes UMB School of Medicine faculty member Dr. Gene Shirokobrod.<\/li>\n<li>A surgeon in Maryland performed a total knee replacement surgery using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/health\/maryland-health\/bs-hs-3d-knee-replacement-20140720,0,7636638.story#ixzz386uPIbRx\" target=\"_blank\">3D printing technology to cast an implant and manufacture the jigs<\/a> &#8211; plastic cutting guides &#8211; that direct incisions.<\/li>\n<li>Pharmacists are exploring a way to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2012\/jul\/21\/chemputer-that-prints-out-drugs\" target=\"_blank\">3D printing to produce drugs<\/a> that are more affordable and customizable to the needs of individual patients.<\/li>\n<li>The National Institutes of Health recently launched the <a href=\"http:\/\/3dprint.nih.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">3D Print Exchange<\/a> so researchers can share 3D print files, acknowledging the important role of 3D modeling and printing technology in biomedical and scientific research.<\/li>\n<li>The White House held its very first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/maker-faire#section-about\" target=\"_blank\">White House Maker Faire<\/a>, stating that the rise of the maker movement represents a huge opportunity for the nation and that it would create the foundation for new products and processes, which can help to revitalize American manufacturing in the same way that the Internet and cloud computing had lowered the barriers to entry for digital startups.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These examples point to a not-so-distant future, in which familiarity with the maker movement and 3D printing technology will be a requisite for students, researchers, and entrepreneurs who wish to stay competitive and successful in health sciences. The HS\/HSL is looking into the possibility of  creating a makerspace on site to support the research, teaching, and study  activities of  the UMB faculty and students and is currently investigating potential funding sources. The book is <em>Tractatus Physico-Anatomico-Medicus de Respiratione Usuque Pulmonum<\/em>, written by Jan Swammerdam, of Amsterdam (1637-1680).<\/p>\n<p>Swammerdam was a leading comparative anatomist during the seventeenth century. Originally his inaugural dissertation at the University of Leipzig, this 1667 book was an early attempt to understand the mechanical operation of the lungs and their role in respiration.  The work describes several complex experiments he undertook to explore those functions.<\/p>\n<p>Swammerdam&#8217;s other major work on insects is already in our Crawford Collection.  We know from our focus on John Crawford during the 200th anniversary that he studied Swammerdam and incorporated background details about insects into his theories concerning the cause of disease. The exhibition explores the rise of AIDS in the early 1980&#8217;s and the evolving response to the epidemic over the last 30 years. The title Surviving and Thriving comes from a book written in 1987 by and for people with AIDS that insisted people could live with AIDS, not just die from it. Jennifer Brier, the exhibition curator, explains that &quot;centering the experience of people with AIDS in the exhibition allows us to see how critical they were, and continue to be, in the political and medical fight against HIV\/AIDS.&quot; Surviving and Thriving presents their stories alongside those of others involved in the national AIDS crisis. The six-banner traveling exhibition utilizes a variety of historic photographs as well as images of pamphlets and publications to illustrate how a group of people responded to, or failed to respond, to HIV\/AIDS. This exhibition was produced by the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.
