Tooey<\/strong>, executive director<\/div>\n<p>Annually, I kick off the academic year and the first issue of <em>Connective Issues<\/em> with my &#8220;Welcome and Welcome Back&#8221; message. It&#8217;s even become somewhat of a joke around the Library. I will admit it&#8217;s not a very original title; however, it is heartfelt. There&#8217;s a certain energy to the start of a new academic year that I truly enjoy. I love meeting new people and greeting old friends, and as anyone who has ever gotten on an elevator with me will attest, I talk to everyone. You see, even after 33 years at UMB, I am still the HS\/HSL&#8217;s biggest fan. Every year brings something new and exciting to talk about and even brag about.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For seasoned members of our community, I hope you&#8217;ve noticed our spiffed up main floor, with new types of furniture, plenty of new power outlets, and updated colors and column signs! We hope to work our way up to the second floor this year.<\/li>\n<li>In October, we will again be partnering with the School of Pharmacy to offer not one but two <a href=\"#02\">flu clinics<\/a>. The partnership was wildly successful last year.<\/li>\n<li>In November, partnering with the JHU Welch Medical Library, Elsevier, and the UMB Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, we will explore the <a href=\"https:\/\/for.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Future of Research<\/a>.  What will research funding look like? Will there still be journals or will artificial intelligence take over the editing and publishing enterprise? <a href=\"#07\">Join us on November 20<\/a> and be prepared to share your ideas along with experts in the field.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, every day I wake up excited to see what new and innovative things are going on here. I hope you are enthusiastic about the HS\/HSL as well. It&#8217;s good to see you!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a id=\"02\" name=\"02\"><\/a>Returning this October: Flu Shot Clinic at the HS\/HSL<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Renovation in Progress\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/02.gif\" alt=\"Flu Shot Clinic at the HS\/HSL\" width=\"549\" height=\"394\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>After so much success with last year&#8217;s clinic\u2014nearly 300 inoculations given!!\u2014the Health Sciences and Human Services Library and the School of Pharmacy in collaboration with Walgreens Pharmacy is again offering Flu Shot Clinics at the HS\/HSL.<\/p>\n<p>The Library will hold two clinics this fall:<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, October 17, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeCi4O8NrPJk6Nrj8NJrETYE_16zb__QcTsnQBspDP_OKCoKQ\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">REGISTER<\/a> &#8211; <em>by October 15<\/em><br \/>\nTuesday,   October 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScwoZUvzk9JobIGtFNH3-bJht0cEZ9ShY_AqaaEEhoIAZNXcQ\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">REGISTER<\/a> &#8211; <em>by October 18<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Flu shots will be available both days for UMB Campus members and their families. ORCID can be integrated into every step of the research workflow, from grant application to manuscript submission.<\/p>\n<p>In July, NIH, AHRQ, and CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/notice-files\/NOT-OD-19-109.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a>, &#8220;individuals supported by research training, fellowship, research education, and career development awards will be required to have ORCID iDs &#8230; beginning in FY 2020&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a trainee, fellow, or early career faculty member who receives support from one of the grant types listed in the announcement, you will be required to create and share your ORCID iD through eRA Commons. Depending on your type of award, this will take effect in either October 2019 or January 2020.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about ORCID and ways to most effectively use this tool to track your research on the <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/orcid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HS\/HSL website<\/a>. If you need assistance <a href=\"https:\/\/orcid.org\/register\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating your ORCID iD<\/a>, please <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/assistance\/expertise.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">contact the librarian for your school<\/a>, who can help you set up an ORCID iD, fill out your profile, and link it to your eRA Commons account.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a id=\"10\" name=\"10\"><\/a>Covidence Has Arrived: Faster Reviews, Easy to Use<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Covidence Has Arrived\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/08.jpg\" alt=\"Covidence Has Arrived\" width=\"549\" height=\"124\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>Projects that involve extensive screening of articles can be time consuming and tedious &#8211; as any researcher experienced in systematic reviews, scoping reviews, practice guidelines, and other comprehensive literature reviews can attest.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/covidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Covidence<\/a>, now available at UMB, will expedite and simplify any research project that involves screening hundreds or thousands of references. Upload references from your favorite citations manager (Endnote, Zotero, Mendeley) or directly from PubMed or other databases, then breeze through title and abstract screening. Covidence also works well on mobile devices, so you can screen on the go.<\/p>\n<p>Covidence is perfect for collaborative projects \u2013 even if your team members are at other institutions or on the other side of the world. Set up a project and invite collaborators to join.<\/p>\n<p>After completing the title and abstract review, use Covidence to facilitate full-text screening of articles and set up custom forms for data extraction. It&#8217;s a seamless experience that will speed up the project and keep your team organized.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ashlee Mattingly at the School of Pharmacy has used Covidence to coordinate a complex literature review project during the past year.  Dr. Mattingly appreciates that Covidence &#8220;streamlines the review process from abstract review to data extraction.  Covidence tracks the progress of each member of the review team, allowing for the setting of deadlines and monitoring the status of each review.  When finished, Covidence generates a PRISMA diagram for easy insertion into any manuscript or poster.&#8221;  She has been &#8220;extremely happy with Covidence and encourage[s] others looking to conduct systematic literature reviews to use the system.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Give Covidence a try! May 6 &amp; 13\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/03.jpg\" alt=\"1807: Meet the Artists\" width=\"549\" height=\"272\" border=\"0\"><\/p>\n<p>The  UMB Council for Arts &amp; Culture and the Health Sciences and Human Services  Library (HS\/HSL) held a reception in the Frieda O. Weise Gallery to welcome  artists featured in the UMB\u2019s first edition of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umaryland.edu\/arts\/journal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1807, An Art and Literary Journal<\/a><\/em>.  Faculty, staff and student artists shared stories of the inspiration for their  art pieces. Displayed art included water colors, stained glass, acrylic,  photography, jewelry, hand wrought iron and various other mixed medium pieces.<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_0_placeholder\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a id=\"13\" name=\"13\"><\/a>New Additions to Historical Collections<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p>In the last few months, Historical Collections has received several new items.  These items enrich the collections already housed in the HS\/HSL.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"1837 Class Notes of Henry Waters\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/13-01.jpg\" class=\"left\" alt=\"1837 Class Notes of Henry Waters\" width=\"215\" height=\"215\" border=\"0\"><em><strong>1837 Class Notes of Henry Waters<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This summer the HS\/HSL Historical Collections purchased the 240-page class notebook of Dr. Henry Waters, class of 1837.  The volume includes lecture notes from courses with Dr. Nathaniel Potter, professor of material medica and pathology; Dr. Robert E. Griffith, professor of material medica; and Dr. Nathan Ryno Smith, professor of surgery.  In addition to the notebook, Historical Collections holds Dr. Henry Waters&#8217; 1837 thesis, which is available in the UMB Digital Archive: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/universityofmary37unse\/page\/n1087\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/universityofmary37unse\/page\/n1087<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dr. Michael Reisch Social Work Volumes<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Michael Reisch, Daniel Thursz Distinguished Professor of Social Justice, retired from the School of Social Work this summer.  Historical Collections accepted several volumes of his personal social work library for our collections.  These volumes are now cataloged and available for researchers.  Additionally, Dr. Reisch donated an unpublished manuscript by Jacob Fisher entitled,<em> The Postwar Purge of Federal Employees: The World that Made it and the Government&#8217;s Loyalty-Security Program Today<\/em>.  Fisher was a leader of the rank and file movement in social work and was blacklisted by the federal government as a result.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth Volumes\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/13-02.jpg\" class=\"right\" alt=\"Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth Volumes\" width=\"170\" height=\"216\" border=\"0\"><em><strong>Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth Volumes<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Eduard Uhlenhuth was professor of Anatomy at the University of Maryland School of Medicine from 1925 to 1955. Historical Collections received a donation of four volumes of Dr. Uhlenhuth&#8217;s papers, dating from 1912 to 1951, as well as his three volume translation of <em>Atlas of Descriptive Human Anatomy<\/em>, written by Johannes Sobotta. The new volumes will supplement Dr. Uhlenhuth&#8217;s manuscript collection, also held in Historical Collections, as well as over 200 volumes from the School of Medicine&#8217;s Anatomy Department that were curated by Dr. Uhlenhuth and date from as early as 1497.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dr. John Talbott Materials<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. John Talbott, professor of psychiatry, retired from the School of Medicine this summer.  Dr. Talbott, an avid researcher and leader in the field of psychiatry, produced several articles and books in the field.  Historical collections received materials relating to his research interests, as well as materials relating to the department of psychiatry.  The materials are not yet ready for research use but will be made available for researchers in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Dr. Salvatore Raiti Materials\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.hshsl.umaryland.edu\/newsletter\/images\/volume13_Number04\/13-03.jpg\" class=\"left\" alt=\"Dr. Salvatore Raiti Materials\" width=\"133\" height=\"195\" border=\"0\"><em><strong>Dr. Salvatore Raiti Materials<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Salvatore Raiti, director of the National Pituitary Agency and chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, was an avid researcher.  He studied the use of the human growth hormone in children with dwarfism.  Dr. Raiti passed away in August 2017 after retiring in 1993.  Historical Collections received reprints of Dr. Raiti&#8217;s articles, books, and book chapters from his widow, Emilia Raiti.  His materials have been added to the collections and are available for researcher use.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-title\">\n<h3><a id=\"14\" name=\"14\"><\/a>Staff News<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<div class=\"article-text\">\n<p><strong>Meg Del Baglivo, MLS, <\/strong>completed  the National Library of Medicine\u2019s four-month course, \u201cBioinformatics and  Biology Essentials for Librarians: Databases, Tools, and Clinical  Applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Ann Williams, MSLS<\/strong>, gave an interview about  Health Literacy to the Harford Cable Network program <strong><em>Public Health  Matters<\/em><\/strong>. The program is sponsored by the Harford County Department of  Health.&nbsp;The episode is available on the county health department website.<\/p>\n<h3>Honors &amp; Awards<\/h3>\n<p><strong>M.J. Tooey, MLS, AHIP, FMLA<\/strong>,  received the Best Workshop Award from the European Association of Health and  Information Libraries (EAHIL) for her workshop, \u201cMeaningful and Strategic  Alignment: A Roadmap for Library Success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lauren Wheeler, MSLIS<\/strong>, was selected for a one-year term on the NNLM  Data Thesaurus Advisory Board.&nbsp; The board is charged with monitoring,  maintaining, updating, and promoting the <a href=\"https:\/\/nnlm.gov\/data\/thesaurus\"><strong><em>NNLM Data  Thesaurus<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Publications,  Presentations, &amp; Posters<\/h3>\n<p><strong>C. Steven Douglas, MA,  MLS, AHIP,<\/strong> wrote the chapter  \u201cHealth Sciences and Human Services Library Collection Management Support for  the UMB Digital Archive\u201d In <em>Transforming Acquisitions and Collection  Services: Perspectives on Collaboration Within and Across Libraries<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Gorman, MLIS, AHIP, <\/strong>and others presented the poster \u201cA Model for  Assessing Professional Association Engagement\u201d at the American Association of  Colleges of Pharmacy annual meeting in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alexa Mayo, MLIS, AHIP<\/strong>, <strong>Katherine  Downton, MSLIS, <\/strong>and <strong>Everly Brown, MLIS<\/strong>, presented the poster  \u201cEvaluation Strategies for Library Services\u201d at the&nbsp;Medical Library  Association annual meeting in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Zelip, MSLIS, MA<\/strong>, presented the keynote address, &#8220;Getting  the User&#8217;s Job Done: Empathy, Iteration, and Self-learning in the Library,&#8221;  at the May USMAI UX Unconference in Baltimore. He participated in the panel  \u201cUnexpected Partners: Maryland Libraries Leading through Collaboration\u201d at the  Maryland Information Literacy Summit in July.&nbsp;Also in July, Zelip  presented \u201cBuild a Back End!
