Dr. Barry Handwerger

“Close to Home and Far Away”
August 1, 2003 – August 31, 2003

“When I have my camera with me I see the world differently – I see patterns, shadows, and symmetry,” says Dr. Barry S. Handwerger, the photographer behind the current exhibit on the first floor of the HS/HSL. The exhibit, which displays Handwerger’s 35mm and digital photographs, focuses on UMB, Baltimore, his travels and his interests in buildings and the geometric nuances and opportunities in doorways and windows. Handwerger, Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, has been taking pictures for over 30 years. Initially a 35mm photographer, he shifted to digital photography about two years ago. Handwerger says that he enjoys digital photography because he can immediately see the results of his picture, keep or discard the image, and then apply special effects or modify the image until he is satisfied with it. Handwerger, immediate past president of the UMB Faculty Senate and currently president of the School of Medicine Faculty Assembly, hopes that people like the photography because “it shows that anyone who really wants to do this type of photography can do it and, with a little knowledge and experience, be successful.”

“The HS/HSL is pleased to feature Dr. Handwerger’s work. It is lively, with interesting studies of color and composition. Truly, every picture tells a story,” says HS/HSL Executive Director, Frieda Weise.
