Zoning Out, created by artist Sierra Iola, explores how we have designed our modern lives and how carchitecture has become so ubiquitous most people don’t recognize it as a cornerstone of our culture. Whether it is the “inevitable” 42,000 road deaths a year, hyperconsumption, or tire dust, we go about our day-to-day thinking that these seemingly disparate tragedies are mundane, and even trite concerns.
After being plopped in an American suburb, Sierra began questioning how car-centric policies impact our physical health, mental well-being and social cohesion. Zoning Out invites viewers to question what we experience as normal, and how we may reimagine a world that promotes social, environmental and individual wellness by re-puzzling our realities with research and intention.
