Our Vision
The Frieda O. Weise Gallery is located on the first floor of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) at University of Maryland, Baltimore. Since its opening in 2003, the gallery has hosted both individual and group shows featuring local and national artists. Mediums include photographs, paintings, drawings, sculptures, mixed media pieces, and traveling exhibits from institutions such as the National Library of Medicine, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. Baltimore schools have also collaborated with the HSHSL to show student artwork in the Weise Gallery.

Frieda O. Weise
The Weise Gallery is named in honor of Frieda O. Weise, former executive director of the HSHSL and an accomplished photographer. As director, Frieda had a vision for the Library: that it should serve as a community resource and a gathering place, inviting diverse communities from UMB and beyond. And as an experienced photographer, Frieda noticed that the first floor of the Library − with its ample wall space, bold architecture, and abundant natural light − was a perfect environment in which to view and appreciate art.
Frieda O. Weise served as the Executive Director of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library, University of Maryland, Baltimore from 1991-2003.
