Workshop Schedule

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) offers the following workshops free of charge to UMB/UMMC faculty, staff and students.

To register, complete the registration form. Although registration is recommended, walk-ins are welcome.

Workshops are held in one of the library's classrooms located on the lower level. Registrants for an online workshop will receive an email with instructions for joining the session online.

If you are interested in a topic but cannot attend our scheduled workshops, complete this request form to arrange another time to cover the material with a librarian. Consultations can be arranged for individuals or groups. If you are an instructor and would like any of these topics to be covered in a course, contact your school's faculty librarian to arrange a class. 


Citation Managers

Zotero is a citation manager that can save you time and ease your workload. In this workshop you will learn how to organize and share references, build bibliographies, and insert citations in your papers as you write. Zotero is freely available in both web and desktop versions. While not required for attendance, please consider bringing your own computer to the class in order to set up your personal Zotero account.

This 30-minute workshop will provide an overview of three different citation management systems: EndNote, Mendeley and Zotero. You will learn about the interfaces of each system, as well as what the advantages and disadvantages are for each. At the end of the presentation you will be able to make an informed decision about which citation manager best fits your needs.

Communicating with Patients

Are you aware of your patients' ability to understand and act on the information you give them? There is evidence that health care providers overestimate what patients are able to understand. Low health literacy is associated with higher mortality, higher rates of hospitalization and readmission, and poor self-management skills for chronic disease. This workshop covers the basics of health literacy & clear communication including tools that will assist you in creating easy-to-read materials.

Want to improve your communication with patients whose native language is not English? In this workshop you will learn about patient education resources, including medical information available in other languages. This workshop will also examine the effect utilizing these resources can have on patient compliance and improved health.
