Dr. Steven Alles
The first floor gallery at the HS/HSL is featuring the work of Preventive Medicine Resident, Steven Alles, MD. In addition to an MD from Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY, Dr. Alles also holds an MFA from the Rochester Institute of Technology. The colorful and textured works reflect his MFA focus and background in painting and printmaking. Much of the printed work is done with multiple zinc plate etchings.
“When studying for the premedical sciences, I was interested in visually expressing the principles of organic chemistry across multiple scales which became the focus of my thesis for the MFA. This explains some of the chemical symbols and images of people and space. Flowers are pretty, and figure painting expressive. The 3 hexagonal pieces were made during my four years of medical school, and were long term exercises in building which helped mentally with the demands of physician training,” said Alles. He also added, “I will say that I rarely find time to continue my artwork since entering the medical profession.”
Library Executive Director, Frieda Weise remarked, “This art is very different from anything we have exhibited before. It adds a vibrancy and liveliness to the gallery area.”
