Dr. Barry Handwerger
“Petals and Places”
October 2004 – November 12, 2004
Dr. Barry Handwerger is back with another exhibit of his digital photography at the Frieda O. Weise Gallery on the first floor of the HS/HSL. Handwerger, who wowed gallery visitors with his exhibit last year, has returned with a whole new set of images. Although an intrepid world traveler, this year he is focusing on flowers and locations around Baltimore. Some of the images are close up enough to require an intimate examination and some are best viewed from a distance. Again Handwerger has used the power of the digital camera to manipulate images from color to black and white, or even to create an Andy Warhol-esque effect as evidenced by the quartet of lily images on the east wall of the gallery.
Handwerger, a founding member of the “Digi Docs” here at UMB is also Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine. He has been taking pictures for over 30 years. Initially a 35mm photographer, he shifted to digital photography about two years ago. Handwerger says that he enjoys digital photography because he can immediately see the results of his picture, keep or discard the image, and then apply special effects or modify the image until he is satisfied with it. “With a little knowledge and experience, anyone can be successful,” says Handwerger.
“It is so nice to have Dr. Handwerger exhibiting again in the Weise Gallery. He is a thoughtful and creative photographer and his images are truly wonderful,” says HS/HSL Executive Director, M.J. Tooey.
