The new Director of National Library of Medicine (NLM) Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD puts a strong focus on precision medicine in the vision she describes for NLM:

I believe the National Library of Medicine has an important role to play in the Precision Medicine Initiative…and I believe that role’s going to be showing up in a number of the existing services already seen in the Library…

National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines precision medicine is “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person.”

New Poster Printing Service at HS/HSL

The HS/HSL offers poster printing to all UMB faculty, students, and staff and University of Maryland Medical Center staff. Posters will be printed in support of academic, professional, and research purposes.

  • Posters are printed on 42″ x 56″ Glossy Paper. Cutting tools are available in the HS/HLS’s Innovation Space if your poster is smaller.
  • All posters must be submitted as a PDF file and be no less than 100 dpi. Click here for information about how to set up your poster.
  • Cost of poster printing is $50.00. Payment can be made with cash, credit or a fund account.
  • You will receive your poster within 2 business days after submission. Click here for poster submission form.

All posters can be picked up at the Information Services Desk.

Research Impact of Paywalled versus Open Access Papers

A new article has been published by 1Science discussing the reasearch impact of paywalled versus open access papers. Chuck Thomas, Executive Director, USMAI Library Consortium, summarized the findings from the article, including:

  • Publishing in paywalled journals without green archiving is never an effective impact maximization strategy
  • In total, and for all these fields, publishing in paywalled journals with no additional green archiving always yields below average citedness (the average being 1.0).
  • Publishing in paywalled journals is the least impactful strategy overall, and the least impactful in 16 out of 22 fields.
  • On average, open access papers produce a 50% higher research impact than strictly paywalled papers.
  • In all these fields, fostering open access (without distinguishing between gold and green) is always a better research impact maximization strategy than relying on strictly paywalled papers.
  • Having a green copy of a paper is the most impactful research communication strategy overall and the best strategy in 19 fields out of 22.
  • Green is nearly always more effective than relying strictly on gold (20 out of 22 fields).
  • Gold is the best strategy in biology and biomedical research and very close to green in clinical medicine (likely a reflection of the NIH and Wellcome Trust OA mandates).
  • Gold has the least impact in six fields.

New! HS/HSL Off-Campus Log-in Button

Now there is a simple way to log-in to access HS/HSL’s electronic resources when you are off-campus.  Just click the “Off-Campus Access” button in the upper right-hand corner of the Library’s homepage and you will be prompted to sign in with your UM id and password.  You no longer have to do a search and select a resource to sign in .

The “Off-Campus Access” button only appears when you want to log in from off-site.  While on Campus the system should recognize your IP address and let you access resources without logging in.
