New RefWorks Tutorials

Check out the new and updated RefWorks tutorials that the HS/HSL has created for the new RefWorks 2.0 interface. New tutorials include Importing References from PubMed, Creating and Managing Folders, and Attaching Full Text Articles. Click here to view these and many other tutorials from the HS/HSL.

RefWorks 2.0

Beginning on Friday, August 12, the HS/HSL links to RefWorks will be defaulting to the new version RefWorks 2.0. Until December 2011, you will still be able to go back to the Classic version once you login. The look and feel of RefWorks has changed, but the functionality is still the same.

New BioMed Central Journals

BioMed Central has recently begun publishing two new journals: International Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology and G3: Genes

International Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology is a peer reviewed journal publishing important clinical, translational, and basic research, which can support the academic goals of the worldwide pediatric endocrine community. G3: Genes was created to meet the need for rapid review and publication of high-quality foundational research and experimental resources in genetics and genomics. This new journal is peer-reviewed, peer-edited, and fully open access.

New BioMed Central Journal: Microbial Informatics and Experimentation

BioMed Central has now begun publishing the journal Microbial Informatics and Experimentation. It is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal, collegial in tone, which publishes high-quality research related to the application of computational methods to data from microbial organisms and systems.

Current articles are in their provisional PDF format, but the full-text and final PDF versions will be available shortly.

UMB GIS Users Group Meeting

Are you interested in GIS? If you are then you should attend the first UMB GIS User’s Group Meeting. At this meeting you can here how colleagues at UMB are using GIS (Geographical Information Systems), including:

Ryan Shannahan, recent Social Work graduate in the Innovative Institute in the Department of Psychiatry, who will share his work on mapping of risk and protective factors for child maltreatment in Maryland.

Gina Rowe, School of Nursing faculty, will discuss her project mapping primary care provider density and emergency department rates for ambulatory care sensitive conditions.

Julie Spangler, Geographic Information Specialist at the Maryland Poison Center/School of Pharmacy, will share her work exploring spatial patterns found in poison center data.

There will also be an opportunity for you to share the work you are doing with GIS.
The Meeting will take place Thursday June 16th from 12pm-1pm in the Distance Education Room (lower level) of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library.

National Academies Press Offers Free E-Books in PDF

“As of June 2, 2011, all PDF versions of books published by the National Academies Press (NAP) will be downloadable free of charge to anyone. This includes the current catalog of more than 4,000 books plus future reports published by NAP.” NOTE: You may be asked to register for a MyNAP Account. These books can be accessed from the National Academies Press or by title in the E-books A-Z list on the HS/HSL website.

Summer Workshops at HS/HSL

The HS/HSL will be offering several summer workshops in June and July. Topics covered include RefWorks, CINAHL in 30, and Google: Beyond Searching. Late Night Study: Open ’til 2:00 AM!

The Health Sciences & Human Services Library is offering late night study from May 2nd through May 18th, 2011.
Library Hours:
Monday – Thursday: 8am – 2am
Friday – Saturday: 8am – 8pm*
Sunday: 11am – 2am
* Saturday hours represent a pilot during finals.
Shuttles will be available every half hour beginning at midnight to take you safely to your destination.
After 10pm the HS/HSL is open for study purposes only. A UMB OneCard is required to remain in or enter the Library.
