Historical Insights: Provident Hospital, Baltimore’s Black Hospital, 1894-1999
The Provident Hospital was established in 1894 by a group of Black physicians looking to create a place where Black doctors could practice medicine and Black patients could receive medical care. These doctors were not permitted to practice medicine in any of the other Baltimore hospitals. While the hospital experienced its fair share of financial difficulities it survived and supported both Black physicians and patients until 1999.
