Fall Workshops at the HS/HSL

Each semester the HS/HSL offers a series of free workshops for faculty, students and staff. This fall a wide range of workshops will be offered including: Introduction to 3D Modeling, Literature Reviews: An Overview for Students, Using GitHub.com to Manage Your Scholarly Work, RefWorks, and Communicating with Patients. UMB Experts –Discontinued as of September 1, 2015

After careful consideration informed by surveys, experience, and discussions with users and the research deans, the UMB Experts system will be discontinued as of September 1, 2015. The system was not meeting the needs of the University. Faculty librarians working with the Office of Research and Development and the schools will continue to investigate other collaboration tools. If you have questions or would like to confer about ways to identify collaborators at UMB, please contact Patricia Hinegardner at phinegar@hshsl.umaryland.edu.

Technology Brown Bag Forum at the HS/HSL

The HS/HSL is starting a new monthly lunch time event for the Fall semester. Each month we will demonstrate and discuss new and emerging technologies that are relevant to the UMB community.

This month we’ll explore the Bio Digital Human (http://human.biodigital.com), a web and mobile 3D platform for visualizing anatomy, disease, and treatments. We will cover how to use the platform for self-learning and classroom use, and discuss its applicability on a health sciences campus.

This event is free and open to the public. Lunches are welcome. It will take place Thursday August 27th,  from 12-12:45 pm, in the Distance Education Room on the Lower Level of the library.

PubMed Also-Viewed

NCBI has created PubMed Labs as a place to test new innovative features in PubMed and NCBI.  One new feature is PubMed Also-Viewed.  Much like Amazon’s “Customers Who Bought This Item Also Bought,” this feature uses anonymous user data to identify publications that are viewed together by the same user.  It can be found for some articles under the Related Information section on the right-hand side of the page.  For now, this will be in effect for a small sub-set of articles as it has only been using data from the last year, so older articles will be especially underrepresented.

Data Science Hackathon – September 21-23 in Baltimore

The NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) program and the NIH Library are pleased to join the Johns Hopkins (JHU) Bloomberg School of Public Health Department of Biostatistics in announcing the first JHU DaSH – Data Science Hackathon – on September 21-23, 2015 in Baltimore.

The organizers– Drs. Brian Caffo, Leah Jager, Jeff Leek and Roger Peng – include JHU professors who teach the popular Coursera Data Science Specialization. This Data Science Hackathon will provide an opportunity for hands-on training that reinforces and builds on data management and analysis skills such as those covered in the MOOC specialization (completion of the specialization is not a prerequisite).

“This event will be an opportunity for data scientists and data scientists-in-training to get together and hack on real-world problems collaboratively and to learn from each other.  The DaSH will feature data scientists from government, academia, and industry presenting problems and describing challenges in their respective areas. There will also be a number of networking opportunities where attendees can get to know each other.”

JHU DaSH will provide a local opportunity for NIH scientists and trainees to participate in a data science Hackathon. For more information, see https://regonline.com/jhudash. Access to Embase Features and Elsevier Databases Limited 7/31-8/1

On July 31st, Embase will be making new updates and releasing new features. During this time on July 31st from 6am-12pm,  it is recommended you do not save searches or email alerts during this time.

Additionally all Elsevier databases including Embase, Scopus, and ScienceDirect will be unavailable on August 1st from 6-10:30pm due to scheduled maintenance.

New Summer Workshops for August

The HS/HSL will be offering several workshops over the month of August. Introduction to 3D Modeling, will show you how to find existing models and how to make models from scratch. No previous experienced is required!

Introduction to 3D Printing will show you  where to find and download 3D model files online, and learn the steps to take to ensure that the file can actually be printed including scaling and checking for non-manifold geometry issues. The workshop will also provide an introduction to how to operate 3D printers – Makerbot Replicator 2X and Afinia H480 – which you can use at the HS/HSL Innovation Space.

GitHub is a web service that provides authors control of their work history and makes sharing and publishing information online easy. In the Using Github.com to Manage your Scholarly Work workshop, you willl earn to use GitHub to solve problems like struggling with clumsy file-naming conventions for documents that change over time, or keeping track of updates to multiple files by multiple team members.
