New Benefit for UMB Authors: No Open Access Fees

Open Access Logo

Publishing open access (OA) is now easier and more affordable for UMB researchers. The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) signed two Read and Publish agreements with major academic publishers Elsevier and Wiley.

These agreements allow UMB faculty, staff, and students to publish open access in selected journals without paying article processing charges (APCs).

Here’s how it works:

  • You must be the corresponding author on the article.

  • The article must be accepted by a participating journal.

  • When completing the copyright and licensing agreements in the journal publisher’s portal., you’ll be prompted to choose the free OA option if the journal is eligible and funding is still available.

This benefit is limited, so if the option isn’t visible during submission, it may mean:

  • The journal isn’t part of the agreement.

  • UMB’s allotment of OA publishing credits for the year has been used up.
