Center for Data and Bioinformation Services

Overview

The Center for Data and Bioinformation Services (CDABS) is the hub for data and bioinformation learning, services, resources, and communication at the Health Sciences & Human Services Library of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. We serve faculty, students, and staff of the UMB and UMMC communities. Our staff has expertise in research data management, research computing, bioinformatics, data science, data visualization and graphic design, high performance computing, reproducible research practices and more. In addition to the services we offer in-house, we can also help connect you to services around campus and beyond if they fit your needs.

Learning

Visit our guides for an introduction to the basics of Research Data Management and Bioinformation. View a tutorial to learn more about specific tools and software programs, or attend one of our workshops on a wide range of data and bioinformation topics - including writing data management plans, programming in R, introduction to the command line, and NCBI tools. Workshops are free and open to the UMB community. We can also work with you to deliver workshops tailored specifically to your department or program needs. To discuss, please contact us at data@hshsl.umaryland.edu.

Services

Schedule a free consultation to discuss your specific research project needs. Get recommendations on locating publicly available datasets and research computing tools, research project planning and organization, high-throughput molecular data analysis and data sharing. Our Bioinformationist can assist with submitting sequence data to SRA and GEO as well as retrieving sequence data from NIH repositories. For a fee, we also provide a data visualization service, which can assist you with creating professional-quality visualizations for publications and grants. This service is eligible for ICTR vouchers.

Resources

We enable research and education by providing IT resources tailored to the unique needs of members of the UMB community. CDABS is the home of the UMB Data Catalog which contains records of datasets produced or used by UMB researchers. Share your own data or use it to find datasets and collaborators to work with. Our Bioinformatics and Data Science workstation provides upgraded RAM and processor for accomplishing memory intensive and compute demanding data analysis tasks such as machine learning, principal component analysis, natural language processing and statistical modeling. The workstation provides a Unix/Linux computing environment and comes equipped open-source software for bioinformatics and data science. CDABS also oversees UMB membership in several important data repositories and enclaves including ICPSR and All of Us. We can help with access and training on these data resources.

Communication
