First Women of the University of Maryland, Baltimore

In March 2020, before UMB entered into mandatory telework due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the HSHSL installed an exhibit called First Women of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As the title suggests, the exhibit highlighted the first women—first graduates, deans, etc.—of UMB. Unfortunately, the exhibit was installed a mere two weeks before the library shut down and was taken down before the library reopened in the fall; therefore, few people had the opportunity to view the exhibit. Submit your story to UnMasking a Pandemic: Stories from UMB during COVID-19

Since June, the Historical Collections Department of the Health Sciences and Human Services Library has been collecting campus reactions to the pandemic as well as personal stories and reflections of the campus community.  The project, UnMasking a Pandemic: Stories from UMB during COVID-19, has received seven submissions since its launch.  Submissions have included diary-like reflections, poetry, photographs, and original artwork. Historical Collections continues to solicit submissions for this project.  Continue reading

Remembering Dr. Burt Jacob Asper, School of Medicine Class of 1911 on Veteran’s Day

This Veteran’s Day the HS/HSL highlights the life of Dr. Burt Jacob Asper, School of Medicine Class of 1911. Dr. Asper served in the Navy on the USS Cyclops during World War I. He was the doctor on the ship when it disappeared in March 1918. To this day the Cyclops wreckage has not been found and it is unclear how the ship was lost. Continue reading

1920: A Look back at the School of Dentistry 100 Years ago

In the 1920-21 academic year the University of Maryland School of Dentistry was entering into its 39th session. It was established as a department in the School of Medicine in 1882.  In 1920 the University of Maryland (in Baltimore) had merged with the Maryland State College of Agriculture.  The merger brought with it the promise of a new dental building, which opened in January 1930 after yet another merger between the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (SOD) and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (occurred in 1924).  Continue reading

UMB in WWII: the classes of 1943M and 1943D

On March 26, Dr. Bruce Jarrell, the University of Maryland Baltimore’s (UMB) Interim President, released a video to the Class of 2020.  In the video, Dr. Jarrell, refers to the uniqueness of the 1943 School of Medicine graduating classes and how they had to overcome unusual circumstances surrounding World War II.  World War II began in September 1939, with Germany’s invasion of Poland; however, the United States did not officially become involved in the conflict until after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
