HS/HSL Hosts NIH Data Science Webinars
Network with researchers and librarians at HS/HSL as we live stream the latest event in the NIH’s Guide to the Fundamentals of Data Science lecture series.
The lectures will cover the basics of data management, representation, computation, statistical inference, data modeling, and other topics relevant to “big data” biomedicine. The series seeks to provide essential training suitable for individuals at all levels of the biomedical community.

Join us for the September Technology Brown Bag. This month’s brown bag will survey solutions for online self publishing. The solutions we’ll discuss range from free to inexpensive, and for beginners to more advanced users.
Examples of tools to be covered include:
- Ready-made design templates & hosting services, such as WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace.
- Free software, like R Markdown, Jekyll,and Pelican, for easily publishing static sites.
- Popular services for website hosting like GitHub Pages, Amazon S3, and Digital Ocean.

Fall Workshops at the HS/HSL
The HS/HSL will be offering free workshops throughout the fall semester. New workshops this semester include APA and Refworks, Introduction to Image J, and Introduction to the Command Line for Managing Genomic Data. Resources on Precision Medicine through National Library of Medicine
The new Director of National Library of Medicine (NLM) Patricia Flatley Brennan, RN, PhD puts a strong focus on precision medicine in the vision she describes for NLM:
I believe the National Library of Medicine has an important role to play in the Precision Medicine Initiative…and I believe that role’s going to be showing up in a number of the existing services already seen in the Library…
National Institutes of Health (NIH) defines precision medicine is “an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that takes into account individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person.”
You can learn more about precision medicine and how NIH is already playing an important role in the Precision Medicine Initiative through a number of NLM resources:
- Genetics Home Reference: Read the guide ‘What is precision medicine?” for a simple overview on the subject, and get additional insights on precision medicine topics like: “What is the difference between precision medicine and personalized medicine? What about pharmacogenomics?” and “What is the Precision Medicine Initiative?” Genetics Home Reference also provides this information in a printable PDF that was recently published on August 9, 2016.
- MedlinePlus Magazine: The Fall 2015 issue of the MedlinePlus Magazine has an article describing the NIH Precision Medicine Initiative, along with stories of how precision medicine has already saved lives.
- PubMed: Search through a wide range of articles indexed through PubMed on the topic of precision medicine, including hundreds of systematic reviews often available in free full text

New Poster Printing Service at HS/HSL
The HS/HSL offers poster printing to all UMB faculty, students, and staff and University of Maryland Medical Center staff. Posters will be printed in support of academic, professional, and research purposes.
- Posters are printed on 42″ x 56″ Glossy Paper. Cutting tools are available in the HS/HLS’s Innovation Space if your poster is smaller.
- All posters must be submitted as a PDF file and be no less than 100 dpi. Click here for information about how to set up your poster.
- Cost of poster printing is $50.00. Payment can be made with cash, credit or a fund account.
- You will receive your poster within 2 business days after submission. Click here for poster submission form.
All posters can be picked up at the Information Services Desk.
