The HSHSL has an electronic subscription to The New York Times and other newspapers through ProQuest’s National Newspapers database. You can access the database using a tablet or phone, but the display may not be optimized.
To access the database, follow these steps:
You will be able to search or browse content from The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and more.
Please note: Some newspaper content may not be available the same day it is posted on the newspaper’s website. Articles published online ahead of their print publication date may not be available from ProQuest until the following day. Article publication dates and titles may also vary from those on the newspaper’s website.
Pro tip: If you can’t find an article using an exact title and publication date search, try expanding the date range and searching with title keywords. You can also browse the latest issue of a specific newspaper by clicking on the Publications option in the three-line menu (☰), selecting the desired title, and using the Choose an Issue to View search option.

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) is pleased to share that Consensus Pro is now available to the UMB community ahead of schedule, with access provided by HSHSL.
Originally planned to launch in January 2026, the Consensus Pro trial has been activated early, giving students, faculty, and staff immediate access to this AI-powered research tool. Consensus Pro helps users explore, summarize, and understand research literature by drawing directly from peer-reviewed sources.
To help you get started, the HSHSL has created a Consensus Pro guide that explains how to create an account and highlights features, best uses, and effective search tips.
The Consensus Pro trial will run for one year as part of a planned evaluation period. We encourage you to explore the tool and share feedback with the library.

Looking for something relaxing to read during the winter break? Visit the HSHSL’s Kinnard Leisure Reading Collection on the first floor and pick out a book to take home for the holidays.
You will find popular fiction, memoirs, mysteries, science writing and more. It is an easy way to unwind, discover a new author or escape into a good story while you rest and recharge.
Browse the shelves the next time you stop by. Check out what you like with your campus ID and enjoy a cozy reading holiday.

The HSHSL offers a clean, private lactation room for UMB faculty, staff, students, and guests. The room includes comfortable seating, a refrigerator for labeled breast milk, and cleaning supplies.
To access the space, visit the Information Services Desk and check out the room key with your campus ID. Keys are loaned for one-hour intervals, and the room can be used as often as needed during your visit. The desk is staffed from 8 a.m. to closing throughout the week and on weekends.
For full details, including guidelines and additional campus lactation spaces, please see our Lactation Room information page.

The HSHSL will launch a year-long premium trial of Consensus, an “AI-powered search engine for scientific research papers.” Consensus uses large language models to search, analyze, and summarize research findings. It is designed to make it easier to explore topics, compare studies, and understand the current state of evidence.
The free trial, organized by the HSHSL, will begin in January 2026. Details on how to access the trial will be shared at the start of the new year. Stay tuned for more information on how you can try out this emerging tool and share your feedback.

The December edition of Connective Issues is out, and it highlights several key updates from across the HSHSL.
This issue opens with a message from the dean reflecting on recent progress and the work ahead. You will also get a preview of the upcoming premium trial of Consensus, an AI research tool launching in January. Another feature shows how to share your work more widely by adding datasets to the UMB Data Catalog. The Season of Giving section rounds out the issue with ways to support the library’s mission and collections.
Take a look and stay connected with what is happening at the HSHSL.
