NCBI Webinar, Oct. 4th, Author Name Standardization (PubMed & ORCID)

On October 4, 2017, NCBI staff will present a webinar on author disambiguation and the advantages of using an ORCID ID.

Disambiguating common author names is tough in any field, but if your published research is cited in PubMed, we can help you find your citations, create a bibliography, and share your publication list with others.

In this webinar, we’ll also talk about the advantage of quickly registering for a free, unique identifier that will remain constant – even if your name changes.

Date & time: Wednesday, October 4, 2017 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM EDT

Register here: http://bit.ly/2wq0dE8

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email with information about attending the webinar. After the live presentation, the webinar will be uploaded to the NCBI YouTube channel. You can learn about future webinars on the Webinars and Courses page.

Whiteboard Project: Which Chair is Best?

We loved all of the responses this one got!  And, we think we have a winner, the blue task chairs (with arm rests) got the most love by far.  We’re not even counting all those votes!

Our old stand by wooden chairs raised 20 votes and the stripey chairs a close 19 votes. There was also an apparent plea for more couches.  You’ll be happy to know that many of the couches around the building are being replaced and are fresh and inviting for a power nap.

The Library Genie will be returning on October 1st.  That might be the time to request something…

NIH Request For Information – Seeks Opinions On Child Enrollment in the All of Us Research Program

You have until Sept 22 to respond to the RFI  to Inform Plans for Child Enrollment in the All of Us Research Program.  Responses should be submitted to this web form.

The All of Us Research Program is an historic effort to gather data from one million or more people living in the United States to accelerate research and improve health. The enrollment of children in the cohort has consistently been an important goal of the program: the Advisory Committee to the NIH Director (ACD) Precision Medicine Initiative Working Group, which developed the final report that informs the All of Us Research Program, strongly supported the inclusion of children in the cohort, recommending that the NIH work thoughtfully and carefully to “develop specific approaches to address the needs of [children] so that they may be included and retained in the cohort.”  The efforts of the Child Enrollment Scientific Vision Working Group (CESVWG), and this RFI, are key to the program’s efforts to develop a thoughtful and appropriate plan for the addition of children to the program.

The CESVWG seeks public input on the pediatric research that the All of Us Research Program may be uniquely positioned to enable through the enrollment of children. Responses should include:

  • What are the most significant short- (0–5 years), medium- (5–10 years), and long-term (more than 10 years) precision medicine research questions that could be addressed by the inclusion of pediatric populations in the All of Us Research Program?
  • What are the key gaps in current pediatric study designs that might be appropriate for All of Us to address through the enrollment of children (for example, preconception studies, sibling studies, etc.)?
  • What are the research resources that the inclusion of children into the All of Us Research Program could potentially generate (for example, innovative algorithms, methodologies, etc.)?

Whiteboard Project: Best Book Series Adaptation?

book series adaptations poll

With season 7 of the popular TV show Game of Thrones drawing to a close in August, we were interested in which well-known book series had produced the best film or TV adaptation. Somewhat surprisingly given all the recent hype, Game of Thrones only came in third place out of four among our voters. The Harry Potter movies came in second place, and the Lord of the Rings films were the clear favorites. The James Bond movies were the most unloved, garnering only six votes. It seems we have many Tolkien fans out there!

Don’t miss your chance to weigh in on our current poll about the best chairs in the library – come by and vote!
