Health Information Resources for Culturally Diverse Patients Workshop

Between 1990 and 2013, the U.S. population identified as having limited English proficiency grew 80 percent, from nearly 14 million to 25.1 million. Cultural diversity within the U.S. continues to increase.

If you provide care for patients or clients with limited English proficiency, did you know the Library provides access to a range of quality multilingual, multicultural health information resources? If you’d like to know more about these resources, come to our Health Information Resources for Culturally Diverse Patients workshop on Tuesday, April 25th from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Learn where to locate patient education resources, including medication information, available in other languages as well as those written in easy-to-read English. Discussion will include the potential impact utilizing health literacy resources can have on patient adherence, safety, and satisfaction. Explore VR with zSpace

You can now visualize and explore human anatomy and DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) files in 3D using the zSpace VR (virtual reality) station and software. The zSpace VR station is located at the HS/HSL Innovation Space and available for use on a first-come first-served basis.

ZSpace VR station allows a user wearing a pair of the 3D glasses to manipulate a digital object with a stylus. The zSpace VR station is connected to a large LCD screen to display the 3D view of the object to a group of viewers who are not wearing the 3D glasses at the same time. The zSpace VR station is equipped with Visible Body, Studio, and zView.

From DNA to Beer Exhibit at the HS/HSL

From DNA to BEER, Harnessing Nature in Medicine & Industry exhibition is on display in the HS/HSL Weise Gallery through April 22, 2017.

Life forms such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds can cause sickness or restore health, and help produce foods and beverages for our consumption. From DNA to Beer: Harnessing Nature in Medicine & Industry explores some of the processes, problems, and potentials inherent in technologies that use life. This traveling exhibition was developed and produced by the National Library of Medicine and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

HS/HSL Special Event: “Confessions of a Homebrewer: the Science and the Passion”

Please join us on April 12 for a special event to accompany our latest gallery exhibit, From DNA to Beer: Harnessing Nature in Medicine & Industry. The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Library’s fifth floor Gladhill Board Room with a talk featuring enthusiastic homebrewer Drew Morgan. Drew will share stories and insights about his brewing hobby and discuss some of the science behind making beer. Following the talk, there will be a reception in the Gladhill Hallway.

Although the event is free, seating is limited, and you must have a printed confirmation/ticket to attend. Attendees must be 21 and IDs will be checked the day of the event.

HS/HSL Closing at 10PM, March 13th Due to Inclement Weather

Due to the inclement weather the HS/HSL building will close at 10PM this evening.  Campus Police have notified us that the UMB Shuttle Service will stop at 7:30PM, but that the Police Escort Service will still be available.

HS/HSL Technology Brown Bag – Artificial Intelligence and the Health Sciences

“Artificial Intelligence (AI)”, or “Machine Learning”, leverages big data to generate new insights and identify new relationships compared to what was previously known. Our next Tech Brown Bag will provide an overview of AI concepts (such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, natural language processing), machine learning software (such as TensorFlow and Weka), and how AI is being applied in the health sciences.

How to Reserve a Study Room

The Library has 45 study rooms available for group use throughout the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. Most are available without reservation on a first come, first served basis. Four study rooms on the HS/HSL’s second floor and ten on the third floor may be reserved for group study.

Priority is given to UM faculty, staff and students.

Each room has a table and chair, white board, wireless and plug-in internet connection, and electrical outlets. Additionally, most study rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floor are equipped with LCD panels to facilitate collaborative study.

White board markers are available to be picked up at the Information Services Desk.

Feel free to bring in snacks and drinks while you’re studying.

Guidelines:

  • Study rooms are meant for groups of two or more.
  • Rooms may be reserved up to three hours a day. Hours do not need to be consecutive.
  • You may reserve rooms up to three weeks in advance.
  • Study rooms must be reserved at least one hour before use.
  • Rooms are self-monitoring. If someone is in a room that you have reserved, kindly ask them to leave or go to the Information Services Desk and ask for assistance.
  • UM faculty, staff & students may reserve rooms using their University of Maryland email address.

Beginning at 8:30 PM on Friday, March 3rd, there will be a planned network outage in that will affect access to, and functionality in, University System of Maryland shared systems. The outage will last approximately 30 minutes.
