Mark your calendars for 4:00pm on September 25th and join the UMB Arts Council and the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL) for a reception in the Weise Gallery, on the main floor of the HS/HSL. View the art from UMB’s inaugural issue of 1807: An Art and Literary Journal. Hear some of the artists describe the inspiration for their work. Light refreshments will be served.
The HS/HSL is pleased to offer faculty, students, and staff access to Covidence. Covidence is a web-based platform that streamlines systematic and other literature reviews, significantly reducing the time and effort required.
Are you aware of your patients’ ability to understand and act on the information you give them? There is evidence that health care providers overestimate what patients are able to understand. Low health literacy is associated with higher mortality, higher rates of hospitalization and readmission, and poor self-management skills for chronic disease. This workshop covers the basics of health literacy & clear communication including tools that will assist you in creating easy-to-read materials.
To learn how to better communicate with patients, attend an Enhancing Patient Outcomes through Clear Health Communication workshop on July 23, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), Classroom LL05. Visit the HS/HSL website to register. Registration is encouraged but not required to attend.
The Leisure Reading Collection offers an alternative to the library’s health sciences and human services content. The collection includes magazine subscriptions and a small circulating collection of fiction and non-fiction material. Find the Leisure Reading Collection on the first floor of the library across from the Information Services Desk. The collection was generously donated by Dr. and Mrs. William J. Kinnard, Jr.
Early Morning Study for UMB Students! Between 6:00 am – 8:00 am, Monday through Friday, enter through the Campus Center with your UMB or UMMC id. Library services and access to classrooms begin at 8:00 am.
Yumi Hogan’s “Quiet Rising 1” Acrylic and Sumi Ink on Canvas
Throughout the past 21 years, the HS/HSL’s Frieda O. Weise Gallery has hosted numerous exhibits of paintings, sculpture, and photography, as well as various traveling exhibitions. The Library has featured works by local, regional, and national artists, including University faculty, staff, and students. After exhibiting in the Weise Gallery, many artists generously donate a piece of art to the Library’s permanent collection. The Library has over 20 pieces of donated art, which you will find displayed throughout the public spaces of the building. The most recent piece added to our collection, Yumi Hogan’s “Quiet Rising 1,” hangs on the first floor. Take a minute to appreciate art. It enriches our everyday experience.
We apologize for the inconvenience while we had our plotter serviced. Glossy posters can now be ordered again at their usual price of $50.00. Canvas posters will be $60.00.
The HS/HSL’s subscription to RefWorks will end on June 30, 2019. If you use RefWorks, you will need to move your citations to a new citation manager. Some free citation manager alternatives are Mendeley and Zotero. EndNote, another popular option, is available for purchase from the UMB Software Licensing Office. Each of these options have different characteristics when it comes to storage space, collaboration capabilities, storing and importing PDFs, as well as other features. It is important to pick the citation manager that is best suited for the work you do. You can find out more about these options on our Citations Managers page.
The Library offers free workshops on each of the citation manager alternatives, so if you are curious about one of them, consider registering. If you have any questions about citation managers, you can email us.
