UMB and MLB: Our four baseball stars
In celebration of the Oriole’s 2021 opening day, let’s take a look back at some of UMB’s major leaguers: John Francis Hayden, Robert Baker Lawson, Archibald Wright Graham, and John Frederick Anderson. From 1901 to 1918, four UMB graduates appeared in major league baseball games, including the World Series! The players graduated from the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine with the Classes of 1902, 1905, and 1909. Continue reading
UMB’s Championship Basketball Team, 1904-1905
It is the end of March, which means March Madness and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is in full swing! The first NCAA tournament occurred in 1939 with eight teams competing for the championship. The first time a University of Maryland team appeared in the tournament was 1958. The 1958 team was composed of players from the University of Maryland, College Park. The University of Maryland, Baltimore has never had a basketball team in the NCAA tournament; however, UMB has produced a championship Basketball team. Continue reading

In celebration of President’s Day, Historical Collections at the HSHSL is looking back on University of Maryland, Baltimore’s connections to the United States Presidency. With a founding date of 1807, UMB is just thirty-one years shy of sharing a birthyear with the United States and with a home in Baltimore a mere thirty-eight miles from Washington, D.C. it is not surprising to find ties to the U.S. Presidency. 1920: A Look back at the School of Dentistry 100 Years ago
In the 1920-21 academic year the University of Maryland School of Dentistry was entering into its 39th session. It was established as a department in the School of Medicine in 1882. In 1920 the University of Maryland (in Baltimore) had merged with the Maryland State College of Agriculture. The merger brought with it the promise of a new dental building, which opened in January 1930 after yet another merger between the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (SOD) and the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (occurred in 1924). “Her Smile” a Poem by Dr. Bert E. Doyle
Rounding out National Poetry Month 2020, is a beautiful love poem by Dr. Bert E. Doyle, School of Dentistry Class of 1904. The poem, titled “Her Smile” was published in the 1903 Bones, molars, and Briefs, the original name for the University of Maryland, Baltimore’s yearbook. Continue reading
UMB Ties to the Hospital Ship USNS Comfort
On March 30, 2020 the USNS Comfort arrived in New York City’s Harbor on a mission to provide assistance to the city’s overwhelmed hospitals in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic. The USNS Comfort is a Navy Hospital Ship with 1,000 beds and 12 operating rooms, which has been deployed in times of crisis and peace around the world. The USNS Comfort is stationed in Norfolk, VA but for a significant portion of her life (1988-2013) as a hospital ship, she was stationed in Baltimore’s Port. The location is not her only ties to the city of Baltimore, as several UMB alumni and faculty served on this hospital ship during her 33-year history. Continue reading
UMB in WWII: the classes of 1943M and 1943D
On March 26, Dr. Bruce Jarrell, the University of Maryland Baltimore’s (UMB) Interim President, released a video to the Class of 2020. In the video, Dr. Jarrell, refers to the uniqueness of the 1943 School of Medicine graduating classes and how they had to overcome unusual circumstances surrounding World War II. World War II began in September 1939, with Germany’s invasion of Poland; however, the United States did not officially become involved in the conflict until after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
