You Can Borrow Items From All 16 USMAI Libraries

usmai

UMB faculty, students and staff can order books and other materials from all of the 16 University System of Maryland (and Affiliated Institutions) libraries.  To search for them, go to the library catalog and choose “all campuses.”  This will allow you to browse the collections of the 16 libraries.  Once you find an item of interest, request the book and select “Health Sciences” to deliver it to.  You will get an email when the item arrives a few days later.  Questions? Contact Information Services at 410-706-7996 or hshsl@umaryland.edu.

Virtual Reality Headsets in the Innovation Space!

thumbnail_hshslgooglecardboard2

Our Innovation Space just launched a fleet of Google Cardboard virtual reality headsets!

Google Cardboard is a low-cost virtual reality platform by Google that consists of a fold-out cardboard viewer and a number of smartphone apps. The viewer is used by placing a smartphone with a Google Cardboard app into the back of it and viewing through the lenses in the front.

There are a number of Google Cardboard viewers in the HS/HSL Innovation Space that are available on a first-come-first-serve basis for use in the library.

Once you install the official Google Cardboard app for Android or for iOS, you’re ready to step into virtual reality! See our Google Cardboard usage guide for more details.

Open Access Week 2016

oaweeklogo

International Open Access Week is October 24-30.

“Open Access” is about the free availability of journal articles on the public internet, allowing anyone to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of these articles and related data sets without financial, legal, or technical barriers other than those related to gaining access to the internet itself.

Many Open Access advocates support this unrestricted access because they believe the results of tax-payer funded research should be shared; since citizens have paid for this research, they should be able to access it at no additional charge. Many Open Access advocates also support unrestricted access because they believe knowledge itself is a public good.

Open Access Week events and resources at HS/HSL include:

  • Using GitHub.com workshop, October 25, 12-1p, Room LL03
(See this recent Nature article about open science on GitHub)
  • Technology Brown Bag on Data Sharing Tools, October 27, 12-12:45p, Room LL05
  • NIH BD2K webinar, “Data Representation Overview”, October 28, 12-1p, Distance Ed Room

In addition to the events listed above, the following HS/HSL resources support Open Access:
