Showcasing and Preserving UMB CURE Scholars’ Works

The HS/HSL is pleased to announce the inclusion of works by UMB CURE Scholars in the UMB Digital Archive. The CURE (Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience) initiative, a NIH National Cancer Institute program, supports and guides underrepresented high school students toward careers as health care providers and medical clinicians.

UMB was the first to take the program a step further, providing mentoring and guidance to middle school students from three Baltimore schools. Young scholars from these schools participated in the first UMB CURE Cancer Disparities Symposium (2017) and presented the results of their research, which included detailed medical illustrations of healthy and unhealthy conditions with posters describing the conditions and disparities. The HS/HSL is proud to preserve the work of these youngest members of our community.

The UMB CURE Cancer Disparities Symposium (2017) works are in the UMB Digital Archive community “Office of the President,” collection UMB CURE Scholars Program, together with all works by and about the scholars and the program. Works from 2018 are currently being added to the Archive.

The UMB Digital Archive is a service of the HS/HSL that digitally collects, preserves, and distributes the campus’s intellectual output and historical record. The UMB CURE Scholars’ work will be preserved and publicly displayed here in perpetuity.

If you are interested in submitting material to the UMB Digital Archive, please email the Archive Team.

Choosing the Right Journal for Your Research – Tuesday October 23, 12-12:30pm

Do you struggle with finding a journal that’s the perfect fit for your research? We can help! In this 30-minute workshop we will discuss a few tools and strategies you can use to identify the journal that best matches your work. Feel free to come with a current manuscript or just to learn approaches for the future.

Open Access and Predatory Publishing – Tuesday October 23, 12:30-1pm

Are you confused about different models of Open Access publishing? Are you wondering if Open Access journals are trustworthy? Are you trying to locate a legitimate Open Access journal to submit your manuscript? In this workshop we will talk about what Open Access is, why you should consider publishing in an Open Access journal, how to evaluate a reputable publisher, and how to differentiate predatory journals and publishers.

Author IDs – Wednesday October 24, 12-12:30pm

This 30 minute workshop will cover three different author IDs – ORCID, Google Scholar, and Scopus. We will discuss the differences between them, and why they can help boost your research impact. The workshop will be followed by a 30 minute open session to give you time to try the tools introduced in the Author IDs workshop and allow you to ask individual questions about your author IDs.

Enhancing Your Research Impact – Thursday October 25, 12-12:30pm

This 30-minute workshop will walk you through methods for enhancing the impact of your research. Topics will include establishing your scholarly identity, making strategic publishing decisions, and enhancing the discoverability of your work. The workshop will be followed by a 30-minute open session to test these strategies and ask questions about your individual research impact.
