The HSHSL Calendar is back for 2024! Unlike last year’s Fatal Beauty calendar, the 2024 offerings invite you to Taste each month’s botanical in savory or sweet dishes and drinks. The calendar features botanicals, flavors, and spices from around the world. Each month you will learn about the botanicals’ native region, discover the cuisine in which it is commonly found, as well as traditional and modern medicinal uses.
As with past calendars, the botanicals in Taste were selected from three volumes in the HSHSL’s Historical Collections Pharmacy Collection: William Curtis and Sir William Jackson Hooker’s The Botanical Magazine, Franz Eugen Kohler’s Medicinal-Pflanzen…, and William Woodville’s Medicinal Botany. The Pharmacy Historical Collection contains influential pharmacy and medical texts, as well as dispensatories, pharmacopoeias, botanicals, and herbals from around the world dating from the 17th century.
The calendar content was written and provided by Tara Wink, Historical Collections Librarian and Archivist with help from Summer 2023 Youth Works Intern Anisah Allen, and designed by Thom Pinho, Lead Instructional Technology Specialist.
A limited number of calendars will be for sale on our website for $10 apiece. They make fantastic gifts!
Two new physical therapy databases provided by the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science have been added to the HSHSL’s database list: AccessPhysiotherapy and the F.A. Davis PT Collection.
AccessPhysiotherapy is devoted exclusively to the study, instruction, and practice of physical therapy. The F.A. Davis PT Collection on AccessPhysiotherapy brings you a comprehensive online PT resource that covers the entire spectrum of physical therapy.
Contains—29 F.A. Davis physical therapy references, including Dutton’s Orthopaedic Examination, Evaluation, and Intervention and O’Sullivan, Physical Rehabilitation.
Physical Therapy Cases—A wide range of cases designed to help physical therapy students learn in the context of real patients by applying the PT principles to real-life situations.
Extensive Video Library—A robust library of over 400+ videos from leaders in the PT field designed to teach exercise and rehabilitation techniques, kinetics, and physical therapy interventions.
The HSHSL will be closed for the Thanksgiving Holiday on Thursday, Nov 23 – Friday, Nov 24. We will return to our regular schedule on Saturday, Nov 25.
The renovation of the third floor is complete, with new study pods, study room tables and chairs, diner-style banquettes, computer tables with second monitors, and new carpet. The new study area is light-filled and comfortable – a destination space. Previously, the third floor housed print journals. Over the past several years, the Library has purchased online access to some of these journals, which has allowed us to free up more study space by recycling the print volumes and removing unnecessary shelving.
Please stop by the third floor to see the beautiful light and views from the Library’s third floor.
Students, take a break! Join us in the Weise Gallery at HSHSL on Nov 2 at 2:00 pm. Enjoy big soft pretzels from Philly Pretzel Factory and assorted beverages. Don’t miss out! ???
How do I write a data management plan? Where should I share my research data? How can I make a graph like I saw in a journal article? To these and other questions, CDABS may have the answers.

The HSHSL Weise Gallery is hosting a fascinating exhibit by artist Dahven White. “Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts” showcases White’s amazing felt artwork. Felting is widely considered the world’s oldest textile art. White primarily uses sheep’s wool and recycled sweaters to create unpredictable three-dimensional organic shapes. Her art and wearables have been featured in many juried exhibitions and art shows.
“Greater Than the Sum of its Parts” runs from October 2 – December 15, 2023.
Join the HSHSL to celebrate Open Access Week (Oct 23-29)!
Have you ever had to pay to read an academic article for your research?
Did you know the for-profit academic publishing industry generates around $25.2 billion annually?
The HSHSL invites you for a free screening of the film Paywall: The Business of Scholarship on Oct. 24 in the HSHSL Collaborative Learning Room (LL02) from noon to 1:30pm. Pizza will be provided!
This documentary delves into the importance of unrestricted access to research and scientific knowledge. Paywall: The Business of Scholarship questions the reasoning behind the rising cost of journal publications. It explores companies like Elsevier and compares its massive profit margins with giant tech companies like Apple, Facebook, and Google.
Join HSHSL librarians after the screening for conversation about the film and about different approaches to scholarly publishing and how well they prioritize the best interests of the public and the academic community.
Space is limited; please register to participate. We look forward to seeing you!
Other ways you can celebrate Open Access Week:
The Library Genie will be accepting wishes throughout the month of October.
Submit your 3 wishes starting October 1.
We are looking forward to your ideas!
