⚡️Power Access Improvements Coming to Library’s Third Floor⚡️

Beginning Wednesday, May 21, the library’s third floor will undergo a project to increase power access and improve the flexibility of study spaces. Work will begin at 6:30 a.m. and is expected to be completed by Monday, June 3.

Intermittent noise is expected during this time. For quieter study, we recommend using the fourth or fifth floors. Earplugs and headphones are available at the Information Services Desk.

Third-floor study rooms will remain available for reservation; however, please note that study rooms are not soundproof.

For questions, contact Information Services at hshsl@umaryland.edu or 410-706-7995.

The Art of Survival: AIDS, Posters, and Public Health

The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) is proud to host AIDS, Posters, and Stories of Public Health: A People’s History of a Pandemic, a traveling exhibition exploring how communities have used posters and storytelling in response to the AIDS crisis. The exhibit will be on display on the HSHSL’s second floor from May 9 to June 12, 2025.

The exhibition draws from the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) archive of public health posters about AIDS, rooted in the work of artists, activists, and community members. These posters use drawing, personal narratives, accessible language, and collective design to send a clear message: more than 40 years after the crisis began, AIDS is not over. A companion digital gallery showcases a curated selection of fully digitized materials from NLM’s historical collections, offering a deeper look into the history behind the exhibit.

AIDS, Posters, and Stories of Public Health: A People’s History of a Pandemic was produced by the National Library of Medicine. It was guest curated by Theodore Kerr, a writer, organizer, and founding member of What Would an HIV Doula Do?

Breakfast for Dinner… and a Memory, Please! 🍳📝

Breakfast for Dinner

Finals are here, and the HSHSL has the comfort food you need to power through — eggs, bacon, biscuits, home fries, and more, served up breakfast-for-dinner style! Join us on Tuesday, May 6, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the HSHSL’s Weise Gallery.

While you’re in line for your plate, we’re asking just one thing in return: share a library memory. It could be a favorite study spot, an event you loved, a helpful librarian or staff member, a funny moment, or anything else that stuck with you.

We’ll hand you a slip of paper and a pen while you wait. Jot it down and pin it to our felt board; your memory becomes part of the library’s story.

This event is co-sponsored by URecFit and Wellness and the University Student Government Association (USGA).

Good luck with finals!

New Benefit for UMB Authors: No Open Access Fees

Open Access Logo

Publishing open access (OA) is now easier and more affordable for UMB researchers. The Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) signed two Read and Publish agreements with major academic publishers Elsevier and Wiley.

These agreements allow UMB faculty, staff, and students to publish open access in selected journals without paying article processing charges (APCs).

Here’s how it works:

  • You must be the corresponding author on the article.

  • The article must be accepted by a participating journal.

  • When completing the copyright and licensing agreements in the journal publisher’s portal., you’ll be prompted to choose the free OA option if the journal is eligible and funding is still available.

This benefit is limited, so if the option isn’t visible during submission, it may mean:

  • The journal isn’t part of the agreement.

  • UMB’s allotment of OA publishing credits for the year has been used up.

To explore eligible journals and get more guidance, visit our Open Access guide.

📩 Questions?
For help with the OA agreements, contact Steve Douglas at sdouglas@hshsl.umaryland.edu.

🔔Update on ERIC Database Changes

ERIC database

Following an earlier announcement regarding funding reductions, the U.S. Department of Education has renewed its contract with AEM Corporation to continue ERIC’s operations under a more restricted scope. No existing content has been removed from ERIC, but users may notice service changes, such as the closure of the ERIC Help Desk and a consolidation of social media communications under the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

This information was shared via an announcement from the IES Newsflash subscription service. If you would like to receive updates directly from IES, you can visit ies.ed.gov/newsflash to subscribe.

We will continue to monitor developments and will share any major updates that affect ERIC access or content.

ERIC Database Faces Major Setbacks Amid Federal Funding Cuts

ERIC (Education Resources Information Center), an essential indexing database for education and the social sciences, will experience a significant reduction in content and curation beginning April 24, 2025, due to federal budget cuts.

ERIC’s collection dates back to the 1960’s and has over 2 million documents, including peer-reviewed journals, books, federal, state and local government reports, key documents from think tanks and state departments of education, dissertations as well as gray literature.

The ERIC database has been backed up by the Data Rescue Project.
