Tips for New Students

With the fall semester beginning, the HS/HSL would like to share some tips to help you get the most out of your time at UMB!
- Need to study with a group, or just want to have a space to shut out distractions? You can reserve certain study rooms throughout the 2nd and 3rd floors. No reservations needed for the rest of the library study spaces!
- Want to learn a new skill, or need a refresher on a resource you haven’t used in a while? Attend one of our free workshops on topics ranging from which citation manager to use, graphic design principles in PowerPoint, and health information resources for culturally diverse patients. For more in-depth research help, you can request a consultation with your school’s librarian.
- Need help? Our Information Services staff are here for you! Visit in person at the desk on the first floor, call 410-706-7995, or use the online chat to get assistance with searching databases, locating items, scanning documents, and more. Go to the Ask Us! page to use the online chat or view answers to frequently asked questions.
- Forgot your charger and your electronic device is about to die? Use our first-floor charging station, located near the restrooms. These secure lockers contain cords compatible with various devices. There are also USB charging ports at most first-floor seating areas.
- Don’t want to lug a laptop around all day? Make use of the desktop computers available throughout all floors of the library. All you need to log in is the barcode from the back of your UMB OneCard!

1807 at the Weise: Meet the Artists

Check Out the Leisure Reading Collection

The Leisure Reading Collection offers an alternative to the library’s health sciences and human services content. The collection includes magazine subscriptions and a small circulating collection of fiction and non-fiction material. Find the Leisure Reading Collection on the first floor of the library across from the Information Services Desk. The collection was generously donated by Dr. and Mrs. William J. Kinnard, Jr.
HS/HSL Closing at 3PM, Friday May 31st
Due to a water main break on campus, the HS/HSL will be closing at 3:00 pm on Friday, May 31st. Please check UMB campus alerts for more information.

Art Enriches the Library

Yumi Hogan’s “Quiet Rising 1” Acrylic and Sumi Ink on Canvas
Throughout the past 21 years, the HS/HSL’s Frieda O. Weise Gallery has hosted numerous exhibits of paintings, sculpture, and photography, as well as various traveling exhibitions. The Library has featured works by local, regional, and national artists, including University faculty, staff, and students. After exhibiting in the Weise Gallery, many artists generously donate a piece of art to the Library’s permanent collection. The Library has over 20 pieces of donated art, which you will find displayed throughout the public spaces of the building. The most recent piece added to our collection, Yumi Hogan’s “Quiet Rising 1,” hangs on the first floor. Take a minute to appreciate art. It enriches our everyday experience.

Glossy Posters are Back!

We apologize for the inconvenience while we had our plotter serviced. Glossy posters can now be ordered again at their usual price of $50.00. Canvas posters will be $60.00.
RefWorks is Going Away

The HS/HSL’s subscription to RefWorks will end on June 30, 2019. If you use RefWorks, you will need to move your citations to a new citation manager. Some free citation manager alternatives are Mendeley and Zotero. EndNote, another popular option, is available for purchase from the UMB Software Licensing Office. Each of these options have different characteristics when it comes to storage space, collaboration capabilities, storing and importing PDFs, as well as other features. It is important to pick the citation manager that is best suited for the work you do. You can find out more about these options on our Citations Managers page.
The Library offers free workshops on each of the citation manager alternatives, so if you are curious about one of them, consider registering. If you have any questions about citation managers, you can email us.
