Are you aware of your patients’ ability to understand and act on the information you give them? There is evidence that health care providers overestimate what patients are able to understand. Low health literacy is associated with higher mortality, higher rates of hospitalization and readmission, and poor self-management skills for chronic disease. This workshop covers the basics of health literacy & clear communication including tools that will assist you in creating easy-to-read materials.
To learn how to better communicate with patients, attend an Enhancing Patient Outcomes through Clear Health Communication workshop on July 23, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m., at the Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), Classroom LL05. Visit the HS/HSL website to register. Registration is encouraged but not required to attend.
The Leisure Reading Collection offers an alternative to the library’s health sciences and human services content. The collection includes magazine subscriptions and a small circulating collection of fiction and non-fiction material. Find the Leisure Reading Collection on the first floor of the library across from the Information Services Desk. The collection was generously donated by Dr. and Mrs. William J. Kinnard, Jr.
Due to a water main break on campus, the HS/HSL will be closing at 3:00 pm on Friday, May 31st. Please check UMB campus alerts for more information.

Throughout the past 21 years, the HS/HSL’s Frieda O. Weise Gallery has hosted numerous exhibits of paintings, sculpture, and photography, as well as various traveling exhibitions. The Library has featured works by local, regional, and national artists, including University faculty, staff, and students. After exhibiting in the Weise Gallery, many artists generously donate a piece of art to the Library’s permanent collection. The Library has over 20 pieces of donated art, which you will find displayed throughout the public spaces of the building. The most recent piece added to our collection, Yumi Hogan’s “Quiet Rising 1,” hangs on the first floor. Take a minute to appreciate art. It enriches our everyday experience.
The HS/HSL will be closed to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend.
