Remembering the Davidge Elm on Arbor Day

Davidge Hall stands as the oldest continuously used medical education building in the United States. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and stands as both a Baltimore and University landmark. For the majority of the building’s over 200-year history, a nearly 80 foot English Elm, known as the Davidge Elm, stood next to it becoming another symbol for the strength and successes of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. UMB and MLB: Our four baseball stars

In celebration of the Oriole’s 2021 opening day, let’s take a look back at some of UMB’s major leaguers: John Francis Hayden, Robert Baker Lawson, Archibald Wright Graham, and John Frederick Anderson.  From 1901 to 1918, four UMB graduates appeared in major league baseball games, including the World Series!  The players graduated from the Schools of Dentistry and Medicine with the Classes of 1902, 1905, and 1909.   Continue reading →

UMB’s Championship Basketball Team, 1904-1905

It is the end of March, which means March Madness and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament is in full swing!  The first NCAA tournament occurred in 1939 with eight teams competing for the championship.  The first time a University of Maryland team appeared in the tournament was 1958.  The 1958 team was composed of players from the University of Maryland, College Park.  The University of Maryland, Baltimore has never had a basketball team in the NCAA tournament; however, UMB has produced a championship Basketball team.  Continue reading →

First Women of the University of Maryland, Baltimore

In March 2020, before UMB entered into mandatory telework due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the HSHSL installed an exhibit called First Women of the University of Maryland, Baltimore. As the title suggests, the exhibit highlighted the first women—first graduates, deans, etc.—of UMB. Unfortunately, the exhibit was installed a mere two weeks before the library shut down and was taken down before the library reopened in the fall; therefore, few people had the opportunity to view the exhibit. UMB and the United States Presidency: Faculty and Alumni Ties to the Country’s Highest Office

In celebration of President’s Day, Historical Collections at the HSHSL is looking back on University of Maryland, Baltimore’s connections to the United States Presidency.  With a founding date of 1807, UMB is just thirty-one years shy of sharing a birthyear with the United States and with a home in Baltimore a mere thirty-eight miles from Washington, D.C. it is not surprising to find ties to the U.S. Presidency.  The following outlines three UMB faculty and alumni and their ties to the highest U.S. Office.  Continue reading →

A History of the UMB Presidency

Biden Jr. is sworn in as President along with Vice President Kamala Harris. 1920: A look back at the Graduate School 100 Years Ago

In 1920 the University of Maryland Graduate School was only a two-year-old institution (the school was established during the 1918-1919 academic year).  The Graduate School was founded at the Maryland State College of Agriculture in College Park, which merged with the University of Maryland (Baltimore) in 1920 forming two campuses under the UM name.  The Graduate School oversaw all students taking graduate coursework at the University of Maryland and remained at College Park after the merger in 1920.  Continue reading →

1920: A Look Back at the School of Nursing (SON) 100 Years Ago

The School of Nursing was founded in 1889 in the University of Maryland University Hospital.  The school was under the leadership of a superintendent of nurses and was part of the School of Medicine.  When the Maryland State College of Agriculture (College Park) and the University of Maryland (Baltimore) merged in 1920, the School of Nursing became its own entity but remained under the administrative control of the University Hospital. 1920: A Look back at the School of Pharmacy 100 Years ago

When the 1920 merger between the University of Maryland (Baltimore) and the Maryland State Agricultural School (College Park) occurred the Department of Pharmacy became the School of Pharmacy. Like many of the schools in the University, the School of Pharmacy was coming off a low period in terms of admissions and graduates because of World War I. At commencement in May 1920 only 16 pharmacists graduated. Continue reading →
